I've been kinda vague in my profile. This is deliberate.  I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes with this, and I'm not trying to be unfriendly.  It's just the way things have to be at this point.

Actually, I'm on this group to find out how others afre dealing with this sort of requirement too.

Thanks for your patience (I hope)

Thanks for the greeting. My son is in Class 288 and leaves for SanDiego in about an hour.  We live in Chicago so having him at Great Lakes has been nice. It will be different having him on the West Coast. Looking forward to using this site as a resource. Thanks again.
  • Randy Reynolds

Thank you.I don,t know anything about the military so this site should help me alot.My grandson just went to bootcamp so I'm looking for a way to see what he is going through.
  • Todd Combs

Thank you Grandpa for the welcome. Navydads is a great site and the resources have been very informative. My son’s answers to most my questions are “everything is good and I’m alright”. So, I’ll be leaning on the members and resources at navydads to fill-in the blanks. Thanks again! -Todd

Thank you for the acknowledgement. We are very proud of our son and his decision to become a sailor. A little disappointed to find out we will have about 4 hours to visit at his PIR. Are there any specific forums or groups associated with particular PIR dates?

    Thank You Again

Thanks for the welcome.  My son enlisted in 2006 and has been on the Amphibious side but has been assigned to the USS Ronald Reagan last month.

  • Bobby G

We are in Southern California .  Norco is in Riverside county, about a hour from Los Angeles.  We are also about hour and a half north of San Diego which made nice,  since our son has ayways been  stationed on North Island.

Thanks.  Iwish I had found this site sooner.  As I stated My son goes through PIR tomorrow.  I would have enjoyed learning about things here over the last 8 weeks.  Most of what info I received was through facebook and my wife's NavyForMoms site.  I am certian that this site will be good for learning more while Andy is serving.  Thanks again.

    Hello Sir,

Thank you for your comments.  I'm very proud of my daughter for joining the Naval Reserves.  I don't have many questions yet but I know when she gets closer to leaving for boot camp I'll have more, which is either December or January 2012..

    Thanks again, Joe Lenahan

  • Terri Ertz

Thanks for the warm welcome grandpa. I've been on N4M for over a year, it just never occurred to me to join the navy dad's site since I'm not a dad, but Mark was persistant & convincing--so here I am. My son joined the navy, went to b/c Nov 2009, PIR'd Jan 2010, then off to Japan May 2010. He then got discharged for sleepwalking a year after joining, but still wants to be in. He wants to see a doctor (sleep specialist) to be "cleared" then re-enlist--if that's even possible.
  • Terri Ertz

He wants things to work out so he can re-enlist. I'm not so sure he can or if they'd accept him back in. Although he didn't get discharged dishonorably...it was an honorable discharge. I just don't want him to get his hopes up for something that may not be possible.
  • Terri Ertz

I'll support him no matter what, I just don't want him getting his heart set on something he won't be able to do.

  • Jim Clemente

Thank you for your kind message. My son Mike comes from a military family. I am retired AF, my fater was Navy, and his grandfather on his mothers side is a retired Lt. Col from the AF. Mike has been in for a little over two years now. He is an IS3 and getting ready to test for E5.  So far he is enjoying his time, but his ship the George Was hington had to make a hasty exit from Japan due to the reactor problems in the north. So they left port a couple of months early. Needless to say, not many sailors are happy, but welcome to the military. Once again, thank you and take care,

                               Jim

  • Victor A. Serrano

Thanks for the welcome.  I will look at the different groups. Thanks again.

Thank you for the welcome!  I have read all the precautionary posts - thanks for pointing them out to me.  If I have specific questions - should I ask them through a private message or post a comment to the group?  I am speaking of questions related to general topics about graduation, pre-BUD's or BUD's?
  • Randy

Thank u for all the information. My son is with 286. They just got back from the island yesterday. Just curious if anyone knows how things went out there. Looking forward to learning more about this site it seams to be very helpful.
  • Maurice Hebert

Thanks for the welcome and for such a great website. It was hard letting him go and not knowing. This sight has a lot of info and I can sort of track what he is doing. The videos are somewhat cute. I have seen movies and would believe that they are a little harder on them than portrayed in videos (not that that is a bad thing) I am proud of his decision and I know he will make it and be a better man for it. His recruiter has signed him up as a logistics specialist. Didn't know what that entails and I dont think he knew but thanks to your sight I know what they do and I think I know where he is going for A school now. Again thanks. Godspeed to ALL OF OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS. Q. Who does the laundry? How does it get done? Cant see a lot of sailors standing outside the laundromat with a handful of quarters.
  • Duane J. Becka

Thanks Grandpa, this site is great!!!  Duane

You never know how inportant family is until they are away from you. What you and the others do is amazing, to make everyone feel like home here.  Thank you so much for being there to help others. It  can be a scary situation for many and the information that you and others put out there is very welcome.

    Hi Grandpa273,

My son is currently in BC/800. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I've seen this comment on several sites "... after Bud/S they have to find their own Housing off base."  I've been removed from the military for some time, but I've never heard of a such a thing? Or has that changed in the military since Viet Nam, or is the Navy different from the Army? Or are these comments I'm seeing being made by married folks? I hope!

    Thanx and regards,

  • Van Jaggers

Grandpa , Brian is scheduled to graduate Apr. the 8th. and is probably going through battlestations this week. His position in the Navy is that of an RP, which means he is to be an administrator to the clergy and be there combatant in the field if nec. Brian will have his A school for 4-5 weeks not sure where yet and then he will have 4 weeks of  bootcamp with the Marines. He will be trained in hand to hand combat and small arms fire. He has a degree in IT , and wanted to get into communications . He would have had to wait a long while to go in if going this route, so he chose this position when there was a need for it. We are waiting for his call after battlestations and can't wait to see him again.

    Keep in touch

    Proud Navy Dad Van.

Thanks and Semper Fi or Calm Seas and fair Winds...

  • Van Jaggers

Grandpa thank you for the kind words in your earlier post. Brian , my son is going through battlestations as I am posting this comment. It is supposed to be from 8-8 according to information my wife got on Navymoms. Say a little prayer for him and the other recruits in his division 921 if you would. I will keep you posted as soon as I find out something.

    Keep in touch

  • William White

Thanks for the welcome Grandpa. I really appreciate it. My son should be at Great Mistakes as of yesterday and I am sure he is having adjustment problems like all the other young men and women in his cohort. We live in Killeen, Texas, home of Fort Hood and 3rd Corps, so we are a bit "ready" for his initiation into the military way of life.  Still, this site has satisfied my curiosities about what "exactly" he may be going through for the next 8 weeks. I am looking forward to seeing him at graduation, and I know he will look back on this experience with the best of feelings (though he may not feel that way next week) ;)  I'm also looking forward to the stories. It is a good career choice for him right now.  Thanks again for the welcome.  Bill White

Thank you gentlemen for your warm welcome. We FINALLY received our first letter from my son. Even though it was a from letter with only a few lines from him it meant everything. Things are going well and he said he made lead recruit petty officer for his division 181 ship 11. We could not be prouder of him. I cannot wait to see him at PIR on 5/26. I hope everyone knows this PIR date changed today from the 27tth to the 26th. Get the word out! Thanks again! GO NAVY!

Thanks for the welcome! My daughter has already completed boot camp and A School in Meridian Mississippi and she is now at the WARCOM base in Coronado. She has been there for several months now and seems to really like it. I just went out for a visit because she had some surgery, while it wasn't the best situation I was glad to see where she lives and works and get to meet some of the people in her command. I stayed at Navy Lodge on the Naval Amphibious Base.

Really New to this whole Navy thing.  I did get my 1st call yesterday!  So excited to hear from him!  He seems to be doing good.  He said he is on "Ship Staff"  I guess that is good.  Not sure.  Any clue what that means?  I do  have a neat story to share.  A friend from High School who still lives in WY son left for the Navy 1 week after Daniel.  When she ( my friend) received her 1 form letter telling her what ship and division David was on she passed it on to me. The chance of the 2 meeting were slim to none with as many men who are there.  Well on Sunday Daniel went to church with a new friend he had made and of all people he ran into my friend Heathers son at church.  He told me he met David and he was nice. David told Dan for me to tell Heather he was fine.  Heather was shocked that David was at church, but happy and thrilled to have some word from him!  God is good!

Thank you very much for the warm welcome, my son is scheduled to leave on June 7th Great Lakes. We are very excited but also very nervous. We know this is a great decision on his behalf and will make him a great man!! Love him very much and stand behind him 100%.
  • Dale Wyman

Well we attended my son's Basic Training Graduation this past Friday and I was very impressed by the ceremony.  My son is an E3 out of basic and has his orders to the 7th fleet after A School.   He did ok in basic with the exception of getting ASMO'd for associating with a female recruit, and apparently it doesnt take much to have that happen.  Warn all sons and daughters entering basic these days to heed the warnings about fraternization with the opposite sex during basic training.

I understand the rules and such as a Navy veteran myself, but with the Navy Motto of Honor, Courage, Commitment" how does one "squeal on another recruit and manage to rank up for squealing while another is ASMO'd? Luckily my son is man enough to have moved past that and look to the future.  I wish him well!!!
