What Were Your Feelings When Your Sailor Joined The Navy:
The fact that Buck turned 18, became an Eagle Scout, and joined the Navy all in a 10 day period had us in a whirlwind of emotions. We were proud he decided to join the Navy, as me and my wife are Navy vets. Proud he became an Eagle Scout, as only 3 percent of scouts ever attian that honor. Finaly sadness, we were glad he had decided on a course for his life , but he would also be leaving us soon.

Tom, Welcome Aboard! I found navyformoms in searching for answers to my son's future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads like n4m's but I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and I hope this site will benefit fathers that come behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud Navy dads just like myself. I hope this site benefits you and your family throughout your sons journey in the Navy. Thank Buck for his service for me and you & your wife as well. Thanks again for joining us.
    Sincerely, EG

Welcome to NavyDads Tom! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun and useful as I have. Explore and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors- my son Eric is on the second half of a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat recently returned from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Tom this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Buck is doing! And thank you and thank your wife for both of your service to our great country. Best Regards- Paul

Even though you both went through the Navy experience (and BTW- thank you again for your service!!) I think it takes on a different meaning and importance when it is your son or daughter that ships off to Great Lakes. We've tried to put together a site that can provide you with the answers to your questions and concerns about the Navy journey that your son is starting so be sure to use the site and let us know if there is anything we can do improve! Paul

hey Tom have some info for you that might help you out some.
  • NavyDads Admin, Tim

http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/index.html if you will click on the recruits families section of this site, then click on the graduations tab. this will give you rules for PIR, Graduation day schedule, Upcoming graduations, honor graduates for the week and directions to the RTC. If you have his ship and Division you will be able to find when his PIR is.
  • NavyDads Admin, Tim

I'm not sure what all they moved from San Diego to Great Lakes. there was quite a few awards there but we didn't spend much time looking around. we hadn't seen our son in 8 weeks so he got all of our attention.

    Tom,
It seems to me that your daughter's heart is in the right place. She obviously has discriminating tastes.
My daughter on the other hand is Penguins fans and could do without the Steelers.
Where is Buck on his Navy Journey and how's he doing?
My sailor is stationed in Hawaii. He like the weather and the work. and is settled in and adjusted.

    Tom, http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/family/upcominggrad.html
this site has your graduation date as April 24th. It also has the number of Divisions at 10 so that puts you at roughly 800 recruits graduating that day. When you get your PIR packet you will get all the information as to when to arrive your parking pass and information as to how and when everything will happen. you will also get information on lodging nearby and places to eat nearby. On the link that I sent you you will find most of this information if you look around in it. Typically this packet will come in about 3 weeks before graduation date so keep an eye out for it in the next couple of weeks.

    Tom,
If you go to ask.com and search Navy Boot Camp there is a series of articles titled surviving Navy Boot Camp. It gives a detailed account of the 8 weeks of training.
Their Boot Camp is not at all like what I went through. There is much more hands on. Much more train like real life.
  • NavyDads Admin, Tim

    Tom,
when we went to PIR we stayed at the navy lodge. there wasn't a whole lot of people there and it is close to the base. it is actually in the E-4 housing area on base. You might look into it also. I think it cost us like $270 for 2 rooms for 4 nites
  • NavyDads Admin, Tim

look on the bottom right hand side of your screen. see where it says Navy Dads (30 members online)? click on that and it will pop up where you can chat with any members that are online that are in the chat section
  • NavyDads Admin, Tim

Tom we were able to get the rooms for PIR no problems. have you happen to read on the 1netc.navy.mil site that I gave you the link to? I remembered you said you had 6 people going up for Buck's PIR. If you look under the Graduation section they only allow 4 guests for each recruit at PIR. so you may have a couple of people that may not get into graduation. might be something that you would want to check into.

I believe that the Navy is turning out sailors better able to function in the fleet. Some of the best training I ever had was at the Sub School in New London after I was in the fleet about 3 months. It applied to what I needed to become a better functioning crew member and watch stander. The "hands on' was the key. Several of our chiefs were training as watch standers as newbie nonquals were trained to stand the helm and the planes at the same time. It made a big difference to train under our own chiefs.
  • Chuck

Thank God for those old chiefs. They made it all work. Some how they seemed to get the men and officers to work together.

Tom B. in regards to our fifth person, it was no big deal. At the gate they just waved us through to a small parking lot, where they checked everyone's IDs, then we went to the larger parking lot. When we got to MCPON Hall, where they process you through, we said we have another person not on the list, will they have to wait? The guy checking us off just said no keep him with you and gave him a hand stamp. He is a foreign exchange student and showed his passport and they didn't even seem to mind. Our graduating training group was only 8 divisions though and that may make a difference. I see yours is ten so you probably will be able to get in. If the person has to wait, you're not that far from the drill hall where they graduate and you have to walk right back by there to the parking lot.

Caitlin is getting settled in in Monterey and can't wait for the classes to start on March 26th. What will your son be doing after Boot Camp?
  • Fred

My son went in on Feb. 25th, I believe he also graduates on April 24th. Did your son also enter on the 25th? My son is in div 923, ship 6, which div is yours in?
  • Carl J

Tom, Thanks for the comment. He is in division 169. I was just browsing for hotels as we are coming from Washington State. Any suggestions? Carl
  • Ken Cook

Thanks, Tom for the information. My son is in division 167. we are going to bring our 11 year old to see his brother pass in review. We think it would be great experience for him and he is so proud of his big brother. I know it is a gamble about getting in, but we would rather try than leave him home. We will see. I hear some people are getting together at Flanagan's on Thursday evening for drinks, food, etc. We are planning to be there.
  • Chuck

    Tom,
What is the latest on Buck? I know that the Diver's training is very demanding both physically and the amount of class room material the give the students. I know when I took the course in Key West it was the hardest 4 weeks of my life.
  • Michele - FL Navy Mom

Tom, come join us!!! We welcome all that love and support our recruits!!! Please invite all the other Dads and loved ones with the same PIR. We are a little chatty and wild, but welcome all...

    Tom,
Good to hear from you again. I'm anxiously counting the days. I can't wait to see my son Carl and how he's grown up in the short time. You said that you son has Battlestations on Thursday. Is that tomorrow, or next week? We usually get our letters here in Washington on Thursdays, so I should get one tomorrow and know more information. The last letter that I received seememd real positive and upbeat. Hope all is well with your son as well. I believe that we are staying at the same hotel as you. We get in there on Wednesday. My grandmother lives in Louisville, so we are flying from Seattle to there on Monday and staying with her for a couple of days and then will drive up to GL on Wednesday. Hope to explore the are on Thursday and hopefully by then will know that he is graduating. Talk to you soon! Carl
  • Michele - FL Navy Mom

  • Michele - FL Navy Mom

Congratulations Tom on your new Sailor, you and Rebecca must be soo proud!! Just a few more days to PIR, I can't wait -- I'm already packed. LOL You and Rebecca will be coming to the Meet & Greet, right? I just can't wait to meet everyone in our little support group -- i would've been lost all these weeks without everyone.

The last of our divisions go through Tuesday night, so just one more night of worry and waiting for our group!!! yeah!!
  • Chuck

Sound like you have a PIR in a couple of days...SAFE TRIP. It is worth the trip.
  • Michele - FL Navy Mom

Tom, so gonna look for you and Rebecca and "mom" at the meet & greet -- can't wait to meet everyone! Cheryl (Melissa's mom) is making us name tags--look for me, just Michele (Michael's Mom DIV 167). I am so proud of our boys and cannot wait to meet everyone...

ENJOY! PIR is one of my favorite memories of Andrew. Delete Comment

Tom Andrew is finding that the Navy holds the common trait of all jobs. A few really great days, a few really bad days, with everything else in between these two. He is steadily progressing in learning his job.
Andrew as bought a car. A Chevy Cobalt 2008 clean with 7200 miles on it.
His leave is approved for him to be home for his brother's high school graduation at the end of June. We are looking forward to having him home for a few days.
