I had aquestion. You stated that you have a daughter that enlisted in the Navy. Its just me being a paranoid dad, but how did she adjust concidering this is a male dominated work force. Do they train the men to respect and treat them as equals. What was you daughters experiance? You are a father of a daughter.....I am sure you know what I am asking.

    Paul,

Thanks for the tip. As and old CT I fondly remember, "What you see here, what you hear here, let it stay here when you leave here".

My Dad was a Seabee, and now my son is following me to to Corry Station...we couldn't even say cryptology out loud then, now it's on the web site.
  • GS65

Hi Paul. Unfortunately, yes, my SR is in Ship 5...been there 21 days now...He is appealing his discharge (long story)...Do you (or anyone else) know how long the process could take??

  • Chuck

    Thanks Paul

Thanks for the welcome. My son Matthew is an EM3 (he's a nuke - he's been in the Navy 3 years now and is in the process of Star Reenlisting) on the Nimitz. It sounds like my other son and I will be joining him on a Tiger Cruise soon and so I'm looking for information on how that works. Again, thanks.

Thank you for the warm welcome sir. I did find this site very comforting. Just talking to other parents of a sailor is awsome to say the least. I have found some intersting things on the site, photos, videos and much more. Thank you for the upkeep on the site, is there a place to donate to the site(paypal)? Again thank you for the time you put into this site.

  • Gary Storch

Thanks Paul for the welcome. Our son, Edward is on his final assignment in Navy career, he will retire in 2014. During his first 14 years he was in Mine Counter Measures out of Engleside, TX making 4 deployment to the Gulf. For the past 3 years he was with Riverene Squadron 3 out of Yorktown, VA first as a M240 gunner on the Security Team, with 1 deployment to Irag and ending up as a Boat Captain. Now for his final tour he's in Key West, FL serving with the Port Security Team. Edward is a QM1 who has never been to a QM school get all of his advancements from the fleet. Some of his accomplishments have been Counter-Terrorism Office while with the MCM community, also Small Arms Instructor just to name a few. He also had a 3 year tour with the Navy Police Force in Roosevelt Roads, PR for his only shore duty as a QM, since QM's don't have any real shore duty assignments. While in Roosevelt Road he got experience working with US Customs and Immigration and DEA. Plus he was there the Viaquez mess getting experience on how the military can deal with unruly civilians.

It's been quite an experience getting use to the new Navy. There have been many changes since I retired in 1978 as and AC1. I joined the Navy right out of high school just as Edward did. Out of my career I only had 3 US duty station for about 6 years total time. Of course there was time in bootcamp and various schools too.  My overseas assignment were Japan, Sicily and Philippines. Then there was about 5 years aboard 3 carriers.

Thanks again for the welcome aboard.

How's things on the MCBH?  Eric doing OK? Andrew is settleing in at Whidbey Island.  He seems happy to be away from the Marines.

  • Chuck

Mayu I say a prayer for Eric?

Andrew was at Whidbey for C school.  He ended up being a guide for the guy that came with him from Hawaii.  The 4 week school turned into a 2 week school.  Andrew said it was a lot like C school was in 2008.  He checked into VQ-1 on Monday of this week.  Seems to like the squadron members he has met so far.  This week is the mandatory Indoc for all newbees to the command.

    Paul On it !

  • Patrick Robbins

Thank you, Paul.  I'm from the Norfolk area of VA, so I've been on the fringes of the Navy.  Now, I'm part of it, and I'm thrilled to be in the family.  I'm excited for my daughter.  I will check out your posts you suggested and learn more about her career.

Thank you Paul for the info. I may have a lot of question along the way :)

  • Jim Kurtenbach

Paul, your team has done a great job with the site, thanks much, Jim
  • Rick Binkley

Thanks for the welcome. I'm a sponge for information since my son decided on the navy. He started DEP back in July 11 and signed a MM contract for subs. He always wanted NSO so he started working with a boatcrew and mentor and finally got his EOD contract in January. He arrived RTC May 8th and I got his ship/div and PIR date today. I come from a military family and live in a military town but this is a new experience being a Navy dad. I appreciate your being here as this is a particularily difficult time for me as he is the first of 3 sons to leave. I'm sure I'll have questions in the future. Thanks again....Rick

  • Jeff Shack

Paul thanks for the advice and the video. I am sure I will be spending plenty of time on this site over the next 5 years. All the best to you and your family!

  • James Lay

Thanks for the warm welcome.  I don't have any children in the Navy but thought I might be able to lend hand.  I am currently stationed at VPU2 which is across the ramp from HSL.  I will be on Island until April of next year. If you need anything let me know.

    Jim

    Hi Paul,
Thanks for the welcome.  My son-in-law is currently at C-school in San Diego. He re-enlisted a few months ago after serving 3 years with the VQ-2 squadron at Whidbey NAS in Oak Harbor, WA.  After training he will be reporting to Helicopter Squadron Light-51 (HSL-51) on the carrier Carl Vinson (CVN-70).  I just found out about Tiger Cruises from my daughter, but will probably be 2 years before I can take one.

  • Carri Newby

Thanks for the welcome, our son leaves December 11th for "boot camp"

  • Kelley Thompson

Thanks Paul! I actually have two sons in basic training right now, they entered about a week apart - one in the Air Force, and the other in the Navy. Of the two, I know most about the Air Force program, but not much about the Navy, so I'll be back a lot!

  • Becky Harris

Thank you for the info on the Abe TC, I appreciate it!  I am going!  I am not missing this opportunity this time around!  Becky...

  • Ray Norberto

Glad to check back in! I've been reading and following, but we've been so crazed - brother (baby of the family!) got married, so we were all looking to make it a very, VERY memorable event. I'm busy dealing with my 15 year old daughter's discovery that lots of boys find her attractive - I have lost a lot of weight and been working on my badass face!

On the Navy front, Chris passed his MA exam for the second time and this time was advanced to Petty Officer 3rd class. He's stoked because he will get more options on his next assignment, which he chooses in July for next April.

Irony about advancement: he received a nice letter commending him on his achievement, which also noted that he would have increased responsibilities, starting immediately, while his pay grade won't step up until September...! Imagine that flying in the private sector!

  • Ray Norberto

Yeah that's what Chris said too. He was just so stoked to get the chevrons.

  • Menchie Morales

Thank you for the warm welcome Paul, and for the very informative introduction..  My SR's in her 6th week at boot camp. This site is awesome..

  • Crystal Stoddart

Thank You Paul my sister was on the Roosevelt the same time as your son how cool. She has been in for almost 22 years so when my husband wanted to join she gave hime the pro's and cons. Since the good list won he decided to join.

  • Paul Mullins

Paul, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to give it all a look. I was an enlisted Nuc (one of the last IC's) and went on to become a Naval Flight Officer after an NROTC scholarship to the University of Florida where I got my engineering degree. I worked with HSL-37 way back in the day.  I was attached to VP-4, Barber's Point.

I was so proud of Matt's decision; he's doing so very well. We have received a dozen or so phone calls since he's been on the Lincoln and I can honestly say that we have not heard the first negative word. Thankful for that.

    Paul

  • JDad

Thanks, Paul.  We'll check the site frequently and when we learn new things we'll be sure to pass along to others what we've learned.

  • Jerome Taylor

    Thanks Paul!
  • Dick Cress

Ryan is currently deployed on the IKE.

  • Russel Bobb

Thanks Paul, looking forward to learning more. Apprecaite the tips. I am not a big social media guy, mostly because I have little time, but I will try to stay connected here when I can.

  • Peter L. Berghold

I actually joined Navy Dads to offer moral support to other Navy parents. Since I am a Sailor (once a Sailor, always a Sailor) and served from 1975 to 1981 I have some insight to life in the Navy.  Having said that I do know things have changed a bit since my day and the Sailors serving now think of guys like me as "Old Navy." :-)

  • Chuck

Talked to Andrew today he is good.  Hoping he can join us for Alyssa's PIR.

The Arrangements up in the air.  Eric doing OK?

  • Chuck

Thanks Paul!!  Andrew was involved in RIMPAC two years ago and he was BUSY.  I figure Eric is too.

  • Jerome Taylor

Thanks for responding Paul. What time will he have to report back to the base each night?
  • Jerome Taylor

What's the swimming requirement for PIR?
  • Rik Tweed

Thanks, Paul - I'll be sure and check in at OPSEC. I'm old enough to remember what they say about loose lips...

  • Michael King

Thank you Paul for all you do here in helping and educating us dads. My son Richard starts bootcamp today so I'll be making my rounds exploring this wonderful site.

  • Jerome Taylor

Paul, how soon after the start of boot camp will my son be able to send/receive mail?
