Navy Jobs?? What Can you say about these Jobs??This is a great site! Im glad i've found it!...

Hi ! My son is recently enlisted in the navy and will be leaving for bootcamp this late November! What can you advice prior to his bootacamp?

He was very confused before if what job he will choose among these jobs: Culinary Specialist (CS), Aviation Machinist Mate(AD) , and Personnnel Specialist (PS). What can you say about these jobs and what should he suppose to choose? But then it's up to him. For me any job in the Navy will do as long as they greatly and proudly served our country. That's the best thing. But then I want guys your opinion.

By the way, what are the jobs of your sailors in the Navy?

Thanks!

Welcome Tem--it can be confusing! My daugther is a media specialist and writes for the Abraham Lincoln's (CVN 72) paper, the Penny Press as well as hosting a radio show on board. My son is a aviation structural mechanic and currently works in the tire and well shop on the Therodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). I'm not too familiar with the three ratings you list, though I know the culinary specialist prepares food. Not at all sure about the PS rating and believe teh machinist mate takes care of the various mechainial systems...very diverse rating!!
With all the folks in Navy Dads I know you'll get further information.
Don't know much about those jobs. So I wouldn't be of much help. I would research them to death. Mark should pick a job that he'll be happy with because I don't think they can switch jobs in the first two years. My son is ABE Aviation Boatswains Mate-Equipment. He works on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. The thing I would look for is a rate that has room for advancement. Some jobs can only rank you so high. Factor that in. He doesn't want a job that doesn't have much chance for advancement. Good luck to you both. Keep me posted on what he chooses. My opinion is it wouldn't hurt to have a good chef around.
from what i hear, you definitely dont want to be a culinary spec. never ending job cooking and washing in the heat. but thats only what i have heard about it.
Tem,
CS is the Navy cooks and if he likes to cook by all means, AD's work on aircraft engines which could be on turbo props or jets. This is a mechanic for airplane engines not bad and should be a good civilian job when he decides to exit the Navy, PS is the admin people who take care of all records for the Navy and the personnel, clean job that is mostly desk duty. I always had a requirment when I was in and that was know and treat the cooks good (your food) make friends with the personnel sailors (PS) (your records) and by all means make friends with the pay personnel( I liked to get paid). You cannot leave out medical as they handle you when you are sick and a lost shot record can sting. I was in aviation before I crossed ratings into the nuclear power field. Work hours for CS is based on the meals and could be long, PS is mostly a 7-4 day job with AD being some long days to get the planes fixed and then some days you well enjoy the day. I hope this helps and good luck.

Don
