It depends if he is a grad n go, where he will go to A school, or whether he has guard duty. Generally after the graduation ceremony you will here the greatest words spoken ( "Liberty" "Liberty" "Liberty" ) they can leave with you right after graduation and return by around 9:00 p.m. that night. The next day you can pick them back up around 7:00 a.m. and return again that night. So most of the time the weekend. If he stays in Great Lakes for A school those kids left graduation and returned back sunday. All they had to do is call in to report. I've also heard of people only getting to spend 30 minutes with their sailor before they had to leave for the airport to report to A school immediatley. Alot of factors add in to what your child's liberty will be. I would say most of the children had liberty the entire weekend to spend with family. If you have questions we will try our best to answer them. EG
thanks,he's headed to groton for sub school before a school, maybe i'll need to wait and see??,just wanted to plan on spending as much time with him as possible
Bill - My son was one of the lucky ones that stayed in Great Lakes for A-school. Hurricane Katrina took out his Training Building in Pensacola so GL is the only other place that does AT training. What job will your son be doing? This is going to depend on his liberty. Also it will depend on the CO of A-school how much liberty they get (if staying in GL). Some sailors from my son's division that also stayed at GL but had a different job than him didn't get overnight liberty, they were ordered to muster each night to A-school base. Unfortunately it is hard to plan the weekend because the Navy can change their mind whenever they want. If I had known my son would have overnight liberty we would have planned much more but I didn't think I would have him as much as we did. Even the security into graduation wasn't half as bad as the brochure you get says (although I still suggest being prepared for the worst). I hope this helps :).
thanks to all for the help. i be flying out this thursday,im really excited to see the kid graduate. finally got my first and only call the other day but the letters home sound encourageing.thanls again!!
Thanks for the info regarding the military packs from USPS. It was fairly simple to order. I'm sure our sailors will appreciate recieving parcels from home.
It also depends on how their ship performed during the last few weeks of bootcamp. My son's ship had some problems, so they weren't given leave until about 8:00 or 8:30 each of the 3 days, and he had to back in by 8:00 Friday, 7:00 Saturday, and I'm not sure about Sunday, since we had to leave by noon. He did have plans to ride the Metro into Chicago that afternoon, but he didn't let us know how late they were letting them out that day.
And they just keep getting better!
