Navy Dads

My son shipped out today and I should be getting that short call around midnight tonight.

Thanks to NavyDads.com, Navyformoms.com, Navydep.com and Reddit I think I am thoroughly prepared. I wish this much information was around when I went through RTC in 1980.

My check list for the trip is almost complete. I'll book my room as soon as I get the form letter. I am looking forward to going to Sarge's meet and greet. The prospective PIR date for him is 1st week of February.

It's 74° down here and it's 19° at Great Lakes. Oh My! LoL

FYI, I downloaded an app for my Galaxy Note called "Another Call Recorder" (ACR) that automatically records phone calls sent or received. It will backup to cloud service. The cool thing is you can send the file to other family members so they can listen to the phone call. I have been testing it out for a few weeks and it has worked perfectly so far.

My son is somewhere with your son, then... He shipped out December 1st as well!!

That worries me some because I will be driving up and I am from Alabama. I may have to park at the hotel and use Sarge's taxi service.

1st week in February? I hope you know how to trudge in the snow! LOL!! I'm going to check out that app. Thanks and keep that phone close by your side!

That means we might be at Great Lakes at the same time for PIR. We should know in a week or so. We need to keep up with the RTC Facebook page in case we get a glimpse of our young men.

I'm sure we will be there!!  We're coming from Texas, so I know how you feel regarding the weather!  Definitely going to keep an eye on that RTC FB page!!

I just got "the box". : (

Yes - my son's box came today a well but I missed it.  There was a sticker on my door.  Headed to go pick it up!

Congratulation to those who's kids have shipped out to basic. My son is shipping out to Great Lakes Tuesday. He is here with me and his step mom now visiting before he leaves. I'm excited and sad at the same time, but I'm proud of him. He is going Nuke, so he still has several years before he hits the fleet.

my boy arrived RTC evening of the 4th and we got his phone call 11:30EST. As for the box...we played it smart. Went through all his old clothes and he arrived with just one change of throwaway clothing, shoes, and toilet articles, and old bookbag. Nothing worth keeping or returning so we won't be getting a box back. He took an old cell that he had set up with whatever apps or such not to make phone calls or message and even tossed that.

Yes, my wife and I have beat all these resources to the ground to get all we could.

Wow that is cool about the app.  I wish I had that yesterday when we got the 3 week "I alive" call. Didn't even think about something like that. I'm going to get that for sure in case I get another call before his " I'm A Sailor" one.

Our son left Monday, 11/17, got his box that Thursday the 20th and form letter on the 25th. I have heard from Navy Moms that a few folks just now getting form letter almost three weeks in. Not sure why the difference in same Ship/Div

We did exactly the same last month when our son left. We still got "the box" 4 days later with only the underwear and the t shirt he left in, lol..not sure why he didnt toss em as he did his pants, shoes and old cell ect..

I was half expecting my son to donate his shirt and pants but send his jacket, boots and phone. He ended up sending everything. When I emptied the box of his belongings I noticed a little piece of paper in the bottom of the box. He had crafted a little note to me on the back of the tag of his socks and left it in the bottom of the box. I may keep the box for keepsakes from his naval career.

maybe I spoke too soon about the box. I got home today and FedEx had left a "Intent to deliver package" post it on the door and signature required. I have no idea what it could be because nobody is expecting anything, but it may be "The Box". But if it is, then they didn't give my son a choice on tossing his stuff. That was the plan, nothing he took was to be kept and he knew it (he even wore a sweater one of his aunts gave him for Xmas because he thought it was hideous and wanted a good reason for "losing" it). If it is the box I'll post and let you guys know, although unless there's a note explaining I won't know why. Which brings up a point....is the sailor on the hook for shipping costs or does the US Navy pick up the tab?

If it is the box then it got here pretty damn quick. He arrived at RTC Thurs evening and package is here (South Carolina) on Monday.
