My son enlisted in a 6YO program and is guaranteed auto advancement to E-4 on completion of his A school. I know there is (or at least used to be in my time) time in service and time in rate requirements for each rank. How does this work?
Does he get an automatic E-2 & E-3 once he fulfills his TIS/TIR or does he get auto E-3 out of boot camp by virtue of the 6YO program?
Everything I've read about auto E-2 & E-3 talks about ROTC, Eagle Scouts, College credits, referring recruits, etc. (of which he has none).
He has already left for boot camp and has either taken his contract with him, or has stored it in his super double secret hideaway so I can't look it up on there.

Active duty obligation is six years. Applicants will enlist for four years and concurrently execute an agreement to extend their enlistment for 24 months.
Advancement. Enlistees enlist as E-1s (seaman recruits). Advancement to E-2 (seaman apprentice) will be made after successful completion of recruit training. Completion of all advancement-in-rate requirements (including minimum time-in-rate) must be completed prior to advancement to E-3 and E-4. Accelerated advancement to E-4 is authorized for all personnel after completion of the training pipeline, provided eligibility in the MT program is maintained.
He's not a nuke, he's ATF. He is going to be a CTN assuming his successfully completes his training.
Got it. Looks like it's all on there...

Dan....you have posted 3 different ratings. Check the Enlisted Ratings link on the Main page for further information....
What's ATF? I know about ATI and ATO......
1. Purpose. The advanced Electronics Field (AEF), Advanced Technical Field (ATF), and Nuclear Field (NF) Programs are incentives for enlistment or reenlistment of enlisted personnel in the Navy. The programs are designed to provide technical or nuclear-trained personnel for naval service.
But I'm not sure how ATF relates to CTN. I think I wanna research it a little more. Some of these rates can be so confusing.

Advanced Techincal Field is part of CTN. Look at page 3 of the link that Gary put up. Still learning this stuff I remain.

The CTN rate is one of the rates in the Advanced Technical Field (ATF)
Advanced Technical Field (ATF); Naval Aircrewmen Mechanical (AWF), Naval Aircrewmen Tactical Helicoper (AWR), Naval Aircrewmen Helicopter (AWS), Naval Aircrewmen Operator (AWO) Naval Aircrewmen Avionics (AWV), Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive (CTI), Crytologic Technician Networks (CTN), Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Interior Communications Electrician (IC), Intelligence Specialist (IS), Information Systems Technician (IT) and Information Systems Technician (Submarine)ITS, Navy Diver (ND), Special Warfare Boat Operator (SB), and Special Operations (SO)
The three "advanced" fields ... Advanced Electronics Field (AEF), Advanced Technical Field (ATF), and Nuclear Field (NF) designate a 6 year obligation rather than 4 years because of the amount of training.
