Navy Dads

It was great to see my son graduate Friday at Great Lakes. What a wonderful day after only communicating through the mail and a couple of phone calls. It was a tiresome hurry up and wait until we finally got to pick him up and take him to dinner. The best advice for those who will go through this be prepared to wait if your sailor is going over to Great Lakes base after graduation. All in all an impressive ceremony and emotional day. Good luck to all you have Recruits in camp.

Congrats Kevin! Looking forward to this in the coming weeks...
Congrats Kevin! How much time did you get to spend with your son over the weekend? My sons PIR is 8/22. He is going to A school at Great Lakes. Just wondering if they will get any weekend liberty.

Over the course of three days , there was a lot of waiting around...... We got to see him on Graduation day, for about 1/2 hour after graduation,    and then we waited outside of the visitors center at the Naval Base until about 3:30......  we had to have him back on base by 9:45   .  We then Picked him up Saturday Morning, which meant waiting for him to walk down from his ship and then driving back to his ship ,  signing him out and then we were able to take him to breakfast and get him back before our flight home.    Had we known he was going to stay at Great Lakes     we would have arranged to stay the weekend,  but when we booked our flights and trip he was going to be going to Florida for school....  so if we had of known we could have spent more time with him during the weekend.    So since you know in advance you should be able to spend a lot more time over the weekend, however be prepared to wait a lot to do it.  And you'll have to sign him in and out each time....

My son is also attending A school at the Great Lakes. We will be there all weekend and staying at the Navy Lodge. I'm sure we'll have a lot of waiting time as well. We were wondering if they would have him stay on base at night or can he join us at the Navy Lodge for an over-night visit? I'm preparing that he can not stay with us and we'll have to shuttle him back and forth. We have about 10 family members coming up for the weekend.

The time we had friday was from the time he was marched up to the gate which was about 330 but then he had to be back by 930 or 945 pm we also were able to have breakfast with him an a visit before our flight that Saturday. I am sure if we were in town till Sunday we could have had more time. But he wasn't allowed to stay with us over night so be prepared to shuttle him. We were under the impression he was shipping to Florida so that's why we didn't include Sunday in or flight plans when we booked. So we missed out on some time that would have been available. Good luck to everyone
