Navy Dads

Challenge coins are cool (I get them for my middle kid who is an Army officer) and I started looking for some good ones to give my youngest whose PIR is on July 12th.

I found some good ones, but then I found a challenge coin for the specific ship he is in at boot camp - Ship 12, USS Triton.  They also have challenge coins for several of the other 'ships' represented at boot camp.

Apparently, they are only sold by this company on ebay (not as an auction, but as a 'buy it now' item).  Anyway, I think they are extremely well done and will be a bit of a surprise and a nice keepsake for my kid.

Here is the site if anyone is interested:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/USS-Triton-Ship-12-U-S-Navy-Recruit-Trainin...

great Idea.....Can you help out with why its called a challenge coin?

just ordered one although it wont be here in time for his P.I.R. Thanks for the Idea and I googled the orgin. Thanks again!

Glad you liked the idea.  I have given my kid in the Army a challenge coin every time he moves up in rank, and I will do the same for my Navy kid now.

A good site to look at challenge coin gift ideas is here:

http://www.opsgear.com/index/page/category/category_id/97/category_...

There are other places that sell them, but these folks seem to have a good selection and they've been great to deal with.

Enjoy your kid's PIR!  I'll be enjoying mine on July 12, so it's getting closer!

David we do have a Challenge Coin group on here if you're interested and watch the video:

In addition, you can purchase them at the online store on here as well:

Nice.  I guess I went to the other place because I had bought my Army kid's coins there.  But navyoutfitters.com has an awesome selection and I will buy my next Navy coins there (already have my eye on the Hospital Corpsman coin for when he graduates from Corpsman school in San Antonio in 16 or so weeks from now).

Thanks for the link.

This is an excellent idea, and I greatly appreciate the suggestion.

My son is also Ship 12, but the ship specific coin on ebay is sold out.

However, I was able to go to the link Gary provided for navyoutfitters and found a coin for Great Lakes RTC, Pensacola NAS (where my son is going for A School), and Navy Aircrewman (my son's future job).

This is a great idea for a PIR gift and we plan to start a collection for my son and get him a challenge coin with every advancement and achievement he makes.

Thanks again for a great idea.

And, thank you to everyone who is on this site.

I have found more information than I expected.

Have a great day.

if you look you'll find a Sailor's Creed coin and a number of other coins that apply.......note they also a Navy folding knife and tons of other goodies......

if you're into woodworking you can venture forth and make some holders for those coins....here are two I made- the hanging one for my daughter and the one on the bookcase for my son

That's an awesome display you have there.

And, that's actually what I was planning on doing.

My father was a woodworking instructor in the Air Force back in the 60's.  (I'm not sure why the Air Force has woodworking instructors at Vandenberg AFB, but that's what he did).  He's still very crafty and loves to have projects to work on and this will be something we can all do together for my son.

There were so many different coins to choose from, such as the Sailor's Creed, that I figure we will wind up adding many throughout my son's service.

Thanks again for all the information.

I looked at this item - it goes to E-Bay - they don't seem to have a coin for Ship 6?? Has anyone seen one anywhere?
