HOW LONG DO ODERS TAKE?

I'll be glad to share with you what I know about this but I'll go ahead and apologize now for not knowing the answer. I've had this site up for close to four years now and your question has been asked many times. At the top right of the site you'll see a "Search Navy Dads" box. Type in specific keywords and you'll see previous members post about your topic.

Now take this with a grain of salt. I've heard of Sailor's being on hold for 3, 6, or 12 months. I've always heard that Sailors are on "hold" because the Navy is waiting for the class to fill up before they spend the time & money to train them. Example: It might take 100 FC's to make a class. Your son could have been the 23rd FC to reach P'Cola. He could be waiting until that 100th makes it there before C school starts. Some might get as lucky as being #100, no wait time. Their are to many variables that we parents will never know for why Sailors spend so much time on hold during their career. But, look at the bright side! Pensacola isn't such a bad place to be stuck in at this time of year.

No need to apologize.  I really appreciate you taking the time to share with me the information you do have, and I will use the "Search Navy Dads" feature. I'm sure he'd be enjoying the winter time a bit more if he was in P'Cola...but, he started at RTC Great Lakes the first week of February in 2011.  After PIR he stayed right there for both ATT and A School to earn his FC rating, and that's where he's on hold.  Don't get me wrong, Chicago is a great city.  I was born there.  But for a sailor born and raised in Southern California that spent his teenage years as a staff member at Camp Emerald Bay (which is the Boy Scout Camp on Catalina Island), and as a Sea Scout sailing around Santa Monica Bay, 2 winters along the shores of Lake Michigan are a little bit colder than he'd like. The worst part for him is that his wife gave birth to our first Granchild on 2-8-12, and he really can't move them to where he is until he gets his orders for C School. But it will all work out in time.

John, I hate to hear he is separated from his wife and child for such a long period of time but understand separation is something we families must deal with during our Sailors career. These Sailors deploy for months at a time even after their schooling is complete. It takes a strong commitment from every one in the family. As they say, "military families serve right along side their Sailor/Soldier". Tell your son to hang in there, including his wife and your family. Also remember, our community will always be here to support your family & Sailor.

Thank you again.  I just got a call from my son and he just received verbal orders.  He starts C School for CWIS in San Diego on May 7.  He's excited that he will be able to move his family there from the LA area.  His mother and I live near Sacramento, a very short flight or just a 9 hour drive to San Diego. It will be nice to have him close, at least until he finishes training
