My son shipped out 7 days ago and got the box within 3 days. Now I am just waiting for the letter and his division number to write back. The wife is driving me crazy with questions so I set her up on NavyMoms.com and she is learning how to cry with the rest of them. I have tried to explain to her what's going on with him during boot being I was there many moons ago (in the 80's), however it gave her something to do and talk to other Navy Moms.

well nuts. No letter today. Takes much longer and I'm gonna start stalking the mailman.
I just watched... It is amazing, but like you said... Dead of Winter. I'd have to fly in and it'd be a land on Thursday, leave on Friday PM kind of deal. In fact, he could possibly beat me to Charleston!! LOL!!
With the insanity at home (2 other kids, Hubs, and elderly FIL), it'd be tough to get it arranged. I' haven't closed the door on it just yet. I too graduated (1987) and remember how those that didn't have supporters show up looked so sad!
Still thinking about it...every day.

Sharon; I’d highly encourage you to go to the PIR. My parents attended mine almost 38 years ago (March 1979), our son is a few weeks behind yours and will also be heading to Charleston SC immediately after Great Lakes. Charleston is about 7 hours from my home (Virginia Beach). Watch a few of the live streams of PIR and you will both see and feel the pride these wonderful young people have in their accomplishments. And it is an accomplishment as parents that he chose to serve.
We are driving about 900 miles as well for PIR. With my luck there will be a huge snow storm I have to drive through.

heh...I'm not being given a choice. My marching orders are to have the car prepared for a long distance drive and update the GPS. Since I like having the little woman warm my backside in bed, I'm embracing the idea of going to Great Lakes. In the dead of winter. In a car with the wife and daughter. For 900 miles. Listening to their music.
I guess I should feel lucky because I am only driving 750 miles. I serviced my Tundra today to get ready.
I wish I could leave now but getting there four weeks early might be a bit much.
depends. How big a bar tab can you afford?
Looks like both our sons are in the same division. Just over 6 weeks until PIR. How long is that in Navy Dad years?

just received word on my sons ship and division..
Ship 13 USS Marvin G. Shields
Division 081
Graduation Jan. 30th.
Just received my son's letter. Ship 14, Division 086. Letter went to his mom, so I've not seen it in full yet. Does letter include PIR date?
yes, it does. It's a form letter where the recruit pencils in his address, which also includes ship number, division number, and has PIR date and the password you need for the gate pass (if you plan on driving into the base). Also a spot where he writes down who he's inviting, 3-4 guests, depending on PIR and number of divisions graduating. My son could invite 4, but only three needed.
Jim, I too got the letter today, same ship & division 14/086, PIR date of February 6th. Do you have or need the complete mailing address? Where is your son going to "A" school?
ok...wife checked NavyforMoms and on one of their groups it lists the PIR dates known so far, for each division. Divisions 75-84, 805, 912 has PIR 01/30/15. Division 85 and higher will be 02/06/15, to be updated. Most likely your recruit's PIR is 2/06, but I can't say for 100%, but Navy Moms are usually pretty accurate on info. The letter will state PIR date, but also mention that although the division will graduate on such or such date, a recruit if he falls back in his training may graduate at another date.
Hi Mike,
Great to hear your son is in the same division and ship. Perhaps our sailors have met already. I would appreciate your posting the full address. We are receiving a scanned copy tomorrow but have some letters ready to drop in the mail.
My son is going to Charleston, SC for Nuke "A" school. Where is your son going?
Also, hope you can clarify for me. My ex told me that they can invite 4 for PIR but that the form only includes spaces for 3 names. Created some confusion ending with my wife thinking she may not be able to attend. Any insight you can share would be very helpful to me right now on how many family members can attend. Thanks.
