Navy Dads

GOT A LETTER FROM MY SON SAYING HE HAD SIGNED UP FOR THE MONTGOMERY GI BILL INSTEAD OF THE POST-9/11 GI BILL. HE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT I THINK ABOUT THAT. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME A SYNOPSIS OF THE DIFFERENCE(S), IF ANY, BETWEEN THE TWO?

I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS THE SAME BILL - WITH SOME AMENDMENTS POST-9/11.

THANKS, PAUL. IN SHORT, I FOUND:

MGIB: SET PAYMENT $1473/MO, 53K OVER 36MOS. PAID TO STUDENT.

          NO HOUSING/BOOK STIPEND.

GOOD FOR STUDENTS WITH HIGHER TUITION (PRIVATE SCHOOL OR GRADUATE PROGRAMS)

POST 9/11: PAYMENT BASED ON COURSE LOAD, TIME SERVED, ETC. PAID TO SCHOOL.

                  UP TO $1K/YEAR FOR BOOKS/FEES.

IT APPEARS THAT VETS ELIGIBLE/RECEIVING MGIB MAY CHANGE TO POST 9/11 IF DESIRED EFF. 2009.
