Navy Dads

After nearly a year in the delayed entry program, my 20 year old son Josh finally shipped out.

I was counting the days hoping that he would not decide to forgo his enlistment. I managed to get him a job a while back & he was working 60 hrs a week & bringing home a lot of $$$. (for a 20 year old) @ that time, he was "high on the hog" & was not sure he wanted to go to the Navy. I knew it was a dead end job, but you know how it is when you are 20 & have $$$ in your pocket.

Well, god works in mysterious ways & a few months back, corporate decided that nobody working there would get 40 hrs a week let alone 60. Josh got a reality check.

I am so relieved that he is now on a track to learn a trade that will benefit him all his life.

Him joining the Navy was my suggestion when he came home over a year ago W/the idea of enlisting in the Army under the "buddy system". I talked to him about how the Navy would be the armed service that would give him the best chance of learning a real marketable trade while serving his country. I also suggested that the Navy would probably be the best way of seeing the world beyond what he knows of it.

Bear in mind that I am an Army vet. lol

Wait until they're 21 (legal drinking age) after being at sea for 6 mos. and have a load of cash in their pockets. It's the stuff legends are made of. I agree with you that he made the right move choosing the Navy. What rating will Josh be?

Not sure about the ratings.

He put machinists mate as his 1st choice when what he really wanted was machine repair. He put that as his 3rd choice. As usual, he made his dicision on what he assumed instaed of checking into it 1st.

They told him that he could still make his choice after boot camp. He wants to learn to be a machinist, CNC lathes, etc.

Supposedly, due to all that he did during his delayed entry, he starts out @ E-2. E-2 I understand.
