How often can sailors out at sea check their e-mails? Do they even have access and/or allowed the use of computers?

it varies a lot. There is limited bandwidth available so times are restricted. As a result, depending on the ship there can be a healthy wait for a computer to be available. Also, depending on security status, communication can be restricted....my example is when Eric was on cruise, Karzai was scheduled to visit the Roosevelt....all comm was restricted as a result for about 3 weeks so as not to compromise security. A lot of the ships have gone through network improvements over the past couple of years. but remember that military comm takes priority and sailor's e-mails are ranked a lower priority......sailors are also plenty busy on cruise and don't have much time or energy for chatting via email
Paul that makes perfect sense as the US Navy runs a tight ship. I gather since this is the case for PC use on-board, personal mobile phones are probably totally out of the question even if they acquire some sort of connectivity. The good old pen & paper still rules! :)

the phones don't do any good for calling, but Eric used his iPhone for 67,000 miles of cruise and for all the underways as an alarm and a music player.............not to mention sending me cool pics from South Africa on a port call and a Christmas morning call from Dubai as I was heading to work.....
That's cool cause he wants to get one under the Military plan :)
