Navy Dads

My son has recently been speaking with a recruiter regarding joining the Navy.  He is scheduled to take his 1st ASVAB next week.  My question is:  Is there a guarantee he will go to school from boot camp?  How does this all work?

I believe all rates have an A-school after bootcamp (I'm not sure about undesignated sailors)- so if your question is about A-school, your short answer is yes....however...rates are determined by qualifications and ASVAB scores AND available billets for the rate. The Navy has a whole lot more recruits than jobs in general now thanks to the economy and numerous rates are filled......the better he does on the ASVAB test (and I'm talking about shooting for a HIGH scores here), the better his odds are at getting a rate he wants. Several of those rates also have a C-school after A-school

Lori,

Not sure of what school your speaking of. After boot camp you will be able to attend graduation and spend a couple of days with your new Sailor. Then your Sailor will head off for his schooling wherever it may be for his rate. You will be able to visit them as often as possible during their schooling. Once they finish school they usually come home for a couple of weeks then off to the fleet, which will be where they are stationed. If your meaning college, he will be able to take college class's the entire time he's in the Navy.
how you end up computing the ASVAB score

That explains a lot. Thank you very much. I bought him ASVAB for Dummies and ASVAB AFQT for Dummies, not sure what the difference is. Hopefully he does.

My son took his first ASVAB test in mid January 2011. He shipped out Feb 22 for bootcamp. He is going to  'A' school right after graduation.According to his recruitor, you could have a week or more off before going to your school, depending on what your school is.My son is going to Sub school and there is no break between PIR and school.
