thanks, we have skype, but a friend told us that he could buy a phone in japan and put our local area code on it and make calls as if they were local calls. does anyone know if this is possible. the friend said her son did this when he was stationed in okinawa.

i know google voice runs through android and you can pick your phone number

For the phone calls I would buy Magic Jack...  They sell them on Ebay for $19 which includes 1 year of phone service.... In the stores they're $39...  He can select any area code in the country.  It truly doesn't matter about it being local or not since long distance is free....

My daughter arrived there on 11/15. We've used Skype and e-mail and Facebook. She bought herself an I Phone and has a local number for that. There's always snail mail.

+-My son got a iPhone with a number that is a local call for us but most of the time we talk on skype as he has it in his phone and laptop. We get to hear from him about every two weeks due to the 15 hr that they are ahead of us here in Texas.

If he gets a smart phone in Yokosuka (there is a Soft Cell store out on Blue Street), he can download Skype onto it and he can call you through Skype for free and text you through facebook for free. Also, if you are with Verizon by any chance, you can add International calling for $5.00 a month and .29 cents a minutes. You can also message through Skype, which is a nice way to keep in touch if he is assigned to a ship and they are out. Skype alerts you when you have a message and will do the same for him. By the way, make sure you download the free version of Skype, it's really not necessary to get any other version.
