MM (Machinist Mate) are the Enginemen. They have several sub-specialties such as welder, diesel engine mechanic, and Engineering Laboratory Technicians (ELTs)

ET (Electronic Technician) are the Reactor Operators (RO). Sub-specialties are for Advanced Electronics and other Advanced classes for the equipment they use to operate the reactor plant.  And contrary to what other's have posted on this webpage, Nuke ETs DO NOT work on the ship's electronics such as SONAR, RADAR, etc. They are responsible only for the gear that is used to operate the reactor, period.

EM (Electrician Mate) are the Electrical Operators (EO). They have a few sub-specialties that are for the electrical operation and maintenance of the main engines, motor generators, etc

MM have several more sub-specialties than the others, yes, but regardless, if your child has a chance to get into the Navy Nuclear Power Program, then they can't go wrong regardless of their rating.

My oldest brother did 6 years in the Navy as an EM. He took what the Navy taught him, went to college, and is now the Director of Quality Assurance at Babcock-Wilcox, the world's leader in nuclear power plants construction for both the Navy and the utility companies. I won't bore you with his houses in North Carolina and California- both on the ocean waterfront- or the "Party House" in Las Vegas! Not bad for 6 years of free nuclear power school, eh?
