Our son is in ship 04, division 811 and will have PIR on 3/28/14. One question I have is how much liberty will he have after the ceremony?

Hello Sean,
From what I have learned, and anyone correct me if I got it wrong.
If your son has A school at Great Lakes, then he must report to the A school immediately after PIR. Upon which he can request liberty after the check in process process, which can be many hours.
If he is going to an A school somewhere else, then he will have liberity the rest of the day, but must report back to his barracks that evening, and catch a flight the next day.
My son has his PIR on 3/14 and A school in South Carolina. He wrote that he catches a Navy bus at 0100 the next day, but does no yet know of any flight time departure.
Hope that helps.

My Daughter just had her PIR on Feb 28th. She was supposed to leave for A school Saturday, but that all changed and she wound up having to stay at Great Lakes for at least 9 more days. She had to get checked in and because of a "slight" problem, she didn't get to us until 4pm. We waited 6 hrs....... UGH!!!! We had just planned to spend Friday with her so we made no arrangements to stay Friday night. So, we managed to spend 4 hrs with her Friday....... I guess what I am saying is be prepared for changes at the last minute.......!!!!!!
Hello Dave,
What a shame. It must have been VERY disappointing for all of you.
How did you know that you should/could wait those 6 hours?
The not knowing if she would even appear later probably drove you all crazy.
Any idea of why she was delayed 9 days?
I don't mean to be nosey or to personal, just wondering how often and why that sort of thing happens?
I SOOO feel for all of you.
When I finished boot camp some years ago, everyone got two weeks leave to go home before A school.
There was never a problem for boot grads and familys. But its a new different Navy now.
The disappointment for your daughter, thinking she was finally getting away and last minute 9 day delay.
In a few weeks it will all be behind her, and you all will be planning her first leave.
Craig
We found out about the changes when we saw her on the deck right after PIR. She had to run off right away. They did make an announcement right before the PIR that this would happen to Sailors that were staying at Great Lakes, but we didn't think this pertained to us...... Then we got to the visitors center and saw a note taped to the door that told us it could be as late as 1600 for the sailor to get there and to find something to do.......
I just heard from her, they have her on the wrong ship(building)..... She is getting conflicting reports........... AMAZING!!!!!!
Hello Dave.
Its begining to sound like a paperwork messup. some yoman mistyping something.
And now with A school expecting her today, the Navy has to fix that too.
I really feel for you and her Mother, but especially for your daughter. All that work in boot, then having to deal with this, and she being new to the Navy and Navy ways. Hard enough for a new Sailor when it all goes right.
Thanks Craig. He's supposed to be staying in Great Lakes for a few weeks of prep school before going to A School in Panama City. We have transportation and hotel booked through Sunday with a return home trip Monday if need be and can adjust both also.
Dave, sorry to hear of the mix-up your family had to deal with. One would think that for our SRs to have to pay such acute attention to the smallest details, that it would show through all the way up the ranks. I know there are factors that come into play that are out of the control of humans but much of it is preventable.
When we were at MEPs the day our SR left, it was so crowed that people had to park around back of the building. There were literally no more parking spots and no signage as to where overflow parking was so people parked where they could. Several times during the day, a woman got on the PA system to inform people that if they were parked out back, that the bus would run over their cars when it pulled out. Now... one would think that with this being the military, and that building being there for many decades, that after all those years, someone would have simply installed a few 'No Parking' signs. I was equally surprised inside the building as due to the crowding, there was standing room only for families and yet again, people were constantly being told they couldn't stand where they were standing but not a single sign in place to express that unwritten concept. It just puzzles me to read my son's letters telling me how many times they must fold sheets or stand at attention perfectly for two hours at a time and pay attention to the smallest details and then witness such confusion in other areas. Don't mean to sound critical, just can't help noticing so much inconsistency.
Hello;
If he is staying in Great Lakes for Dive Prep. He will see you right after PIR for 30-45 minutes. Then he will have to get all his gear and report in at his new digs, this could take till 2 or 3PM He will call you to pick him up at a visitors station. he will can then be with you till 8-9 PM Friday.
We picked up our son 5;30AM next morning and he was with us till 8PM Saturday night. Then Sunday the same.We had to leave so took him back 4PM SUnday.
If he is ND hang for quite a ride with and for him. My son went in 5/6/13 PIR 6/28/13; Grad DIve prep 8/28/13; started dive school Panama City 9/3/13; Grad dive school 1/23/14; Action packed for us all.
Thanks Gary! Some of the best info I've gotten yet... very much appreciated!
Just got a bit more info from my Daughter..... Seems they don't have enough CS to build a full class at Ft Lee..... So she is stuck at Great Lakes for an undetermined amount of time.........
