cams and monopod- no problem.  advise you buy the video and actually concentrate on seeing the ceremony...it's only $29.  That is a cheap investment to really see what is going on rather than worry about filming.....I learned after my first PIR and got the vid for the second one

NO ELECTRONICS until they are at the airport ready to fly out to A-school....your sailor will have all the rules when you meet up at PIR

Thanks Paul, her A school is at great lakes, she won't be flying out.  She checks into A school almost immediately after PIR (I think). So if I stay all weekend, planning on leaving Monday morning, worth bringing the electronics with me in case she can have them once she's checked in?

She will check in right after at PIR....you'll be able to pick her up about 4 hours later.  She will need to return to base each night (and MAY have watch during the weekend)...allow some time to get her back to her barracks rather than cutting the time too close. Electronics should be OK but have her give you the rules when you see her.

HI Bill,

This may be to late don't  know. Our son did his A school at Great Lakes, He was allowed to bring his phone, laptop back with him the very first evening, And I agree with the rest here get her back early enough to get into the swing of things. It was amazing to be there with my son. So funny though you would think you would have plenty to talk about and our son was almost silent. After being told how to respond and act for the last 9 weeks they are a little shell shocked to say the least. Walking and pivot on the corners will happen and all will get a kick out of it. You do look on every Sailor with admiration and I wanted to shake every ones had, I was so proud of them all!! The good news is you will be amazed at your child and the growth they get while there. We even bought a 26" tv that fit in his locker area and as long as it is out of sight during the day as everything has to be the same it was good. He sold it after completion of A School the day before he shipped out for about half of what we paid for it lol. but still worth it.

Thanks for the info Jack.  I'm looking so forward to seeing her but I'm already dreading the goodbyes on Sunday night.  A School is a lot longer than boot camp and then once she's deployed I'm sure it could be many months before I see her again.  I think it'll help a lot that we'll be able to communicate more now but it's not the same.

Hey Bill,

Your welcome. We were the same way, My son just deployed, He will be out approx a year and not having your child at home is Good and bad. I love my kids with all my heart and went from a full house to me and mom in 6 months. My daughter got married and her husband is in the army and they live in Baltimore.

With our son there was leave time in between anyway and that helped. He also had leave time in there and was able to come home for a week. You may get lucky with that. I would say sock some money away for air fair and use it when you can. On a funny note our son really likes knowing what he is going to do the next day, (he is not great at just hanging) so when he comes home he is board out of his mind lol. It generally takes a couple of days for them to get back into home life lol. 

This as parents is what we do though, you raise them to hopefully make it in the world and then set them free, remember that is what we did our selfs, as I remember I could not wait.

Thank you Jack and Lisa!  Prayers coming back your way!  And I think your family for all of your sacrifices.  Never serving myself (which I regret by the way) I don't think I really understood the sacrifices these kids go through to serve.  Anywho, God Bless you both and your whole family!
