RTC Flags and Awards

At each Pass-In-Review, the six recipients of awards will be announced. The Award Winners are chosen among recruits who go before a board of RTC personnel for inspection and questions. RTC sends a letter to a recruit's home of record to inform families that their recruit has earned an award and received special recognition at graduation.

The following is a description of the six awards:

NAVY CLUB OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY EXCELLENCE AWARD: Presented to the graduating recruit who best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, devotion to duty, military appearance and behavior, self-discipline and teamwork. This is the #1 award a recruit can earn.

NAVY LEAGUE AWARD: Presented to the graduating recruit whose enthusiasm, supportive attitude, and willingness to help others during their training period exceeded Navy training standards.

MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA AWARD: Presented to the graduating recruit whose meritorious performance in recruit training demonstrated exceptional professionalism, maturity, integrity and leadership.

MILITARY ORDER OF THE WORLD WARS OF AWARD OF MERIT: Presented to the graduating recruit whose meritorious performance in recruit training demonstrated motivation and dedication to duty.

UNITED SERVICES ORGANIZATION SHIPMATE AWARD: Presented to the graduating recruit whose enthusiasm, supportive attitude and willingness to help others during their training period exceeded Navy training standards.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD: Presented to the graduating recruit who maintained the highest academic and assessment standards throughout all phases of training. Awarded after closeout of test two.

I was wondering why for the MEA, the sponsoring VSO is NOT mentioned. You did with all of the other awards.

In 1976, NCUSA started another project, which was planed as an assist to the Navy Recruiting Command and the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois. It was the consensus of NCUSA that a seaman recruit, as selected by the honors committee of the Great Lakes Center, be given the Navy Club of the U.S.A. ‘Military Excellence Award’ each week that the center held a graduation ceremony. Our recipients receive wrist watches which has the NCUSA emblem on the face of the watch. Needless to say, each succeeding Commander of the Great Lakes Training Center is very impressed with Navy Club's contribution of this award each week. Each and every person attending the graduation ceremonies is informed that NCUSA sponsors this award, which gives our organization publicity, and at the same time honors a deserving  graduating recruit.

In January 2011, Navy Club USA started to sponsor the monthly Student Sailor of the Month, Junior Student Sailor of the Month, Sailor of the Year and Instructor of the Year at the Technical Services Command at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. The monthly Student Sailor of the Month and Junior Student Sailor of the Month receive a pen and pencil set and Certificate of Achievement. The Sailor of the Year and Instructor of the Year receive a Navy Club USA watch and letter of Commendation from the Commanding Office.

Thank you for your consideration.

Mark, is the VSO or Navy Club USA the sponsor of the Military Excellence Award? Who is the VSO? and how can NavyDads have the opportunity to sponsor one of theses awards one day?

We just got the letter saying our son will be getting an award at PIR.

Will my son already know that, or is this a surprise?  I'm not sure if we should mention it next time he calls.

Thanks for this.  That "Excellence Award" must be a true honor, and (as a father) would look good on a resume.

It is two days before my son's PIR and I realized my son was receiving an Award through the RTC website.  I understand that most award winners receive a letter notifying the families of the Sailors accomplishment; however, I did not.  I have emailed RTC, but I thought I would ask here if anyone else happened to be in the same situation as I am and how they went about it.  I imagined that I would arrive at 6:30am at the RTC on PIR day and speak to an official there.  Any other suggestions?
