Where do active duty sailors find out what jobs are undermanned or available?
My son is at A school and I thought we had a plan for him to get on a carrier but he's being talked out of it even though he was originally told his training was only applicable to carrier duty.

If you check out our group Career Planning
I've got some info I posted from Navy Times detailing manning of rates and what rates have open billets.
1) have no idea
2) not realtime....from Navy Times earlier this year.

I'm not assuming the situation has changed

You'd have to check with a recruiter I imagine

Is there someplace for them to see this through the mititary websites?

Jobs in the Navy are call Ratings
Go to http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/navyjobs.htm. you will see a list of communities. Click on the community and you will find a list of ratings for that community. Click on one of the ratings and there will be a detailed description of that particulr rating. Scroll down near the end of the description and there is a link that looks like this: Current Manning Levels for This Rating: CREO Listing. Click on the CREO Listing and there is a numerical ranking that shows the "manning level" I do not believe that this is realtime nor do I know the dates information is posted. It is however, accurate for my son's rating.

The needs of of the Navy trump everything. Nothing is for sure till you finish A school. What happens to the sailor who cannot cuit it in A school. Over to the councilers and then a new rating path.

...and how does the "needs of the Navy" come into play? So a guy enlists and is told that's a good rate, he quals, etc...Then is in DEP for 8 months, goes through boot, then is told that rate is closed now. So can he take another job then change later back to what he signed up for?
