Navy Dads

My son just graduated from A school in Pennsacola and has been in San Diego for three days now.  He says the living conditions are horrible and has not been assigned to his barracks yet.  He also says it is like living like a homeless person and his to use all his survival techniques.  Does not have a food galley like Pensacola and has to buy his food as well as find it.  Had to beg for a fork on yesterday to eat his ramen noodles.  Of course this made my heart saddend.  He stated that it will get better when he is assigned to barracks.  Right now he is sharing with a room full of other guys and its not too pleasant, but he says he is determined.  I am proud of my son for being a man and holding on but I hope he doesn't have to go thru this much longer.  Can anyone shed any light.  Thanks.

No I think the name of the ship is bonehart. He is awaiting a room in the barracks.  Yes he has been asking on a daily basis.  He said there are about 20 sailors in one room, three showers and three sinks and it will be about three more weeks until he is assigned to a barrack.  He said he just found out that the base is in walking distance on yesterday.  That made him feel better.  He said no one is telling him much of nothing and has to learn a lot on his own.  You know tension will probably rise in such a tight area.  I told him to be cool and do what he has to do.  He said he really needs a car because he has to catch a cab to go anywhere.  Hopefully they will put him in a barrack soon.  He said this ship has no rifrigerator, microwave or stove.  He states he has to report to duty at 545 am but has to get up at 3a to stand in line for shower.  He just found out last night where the base is so I will tell him what you said that he needs to talk to someone on base.

Is he in a hotel? I assume he has reported for duty? I would think that if he was sent to San Diego, there would have been a room in the barracks available. All those guys sharing a room should be, have been in contact with someone on base. They need to call or visit the base and pester someone. Is he assigned to a ship? Waiting to go aboard? It's not unusual for sailors to have to buy food off base.

I am not a sailor, but being in the military in my past, these things happen. Not to make lite of the situation, but this is when the guys and gals learn to improvise, overcome, and excel. This is what separates the "Can Do's" from the "Cannot's". He will be fine, tell him to keep his eye on the goal, the mission whatever it may be, and drive on, this is when he draws on his basic training days when he had to stand in line for ever to get a shower and when he had to make do with 5 minutes to eat his slop. He will be fine, the best thing you can do is let him know that it could be worse. He could of joined the Marines!

Well I am a little biased towards where the young man is stationed at as well, I grew up in San Diego, and I gotta say, if your going to be stuck somewhere and having a rough time at it, San Diego is the place to be! It is a great city.

By the way, to the original poster, how is the young man getting along in San Diego? Does he know his way around? I am just a phone call away and 2 hours up the road from him, if he needs some help knowing his way around that great town, he can give us a call anytime. I know that town like the back of my hand.

You know, I just got to thinking, if any of the Dad's and Moms here need some information about hotels and other resources in San Diego, feel free to give drop me a line, I will help out as much as possible.

Thanks I do feel encouraged!!

Well, I'm sure he will survive. I know it can be difficult at times, but he is a US Sailor and the Navy will take care of him. All you can do is be encouraging and assure him it'll get better.

The ship is called Bonehart its down the street from the base.  I dont know maybe he is just ready to get to his barracks.  I guess he got kind of use to A school in Pcola where it was just two to a room.  But he says no galley.  I may have the name wrong; The ship name Bone Rashard? Bonehart? USS Bonehart?  He has no reception on his sprint phone, so I have to wait until he calls me so I can ask him again the name.

You know, the more I think about this, the more I wonder. Is he living on the ship? I'm confused. All Navy/Military bases have some sort of galley/mess hall. All ships have a galley. Maybe I mis-understood you. Something just doesn't sound right you know what I mean?

Hey John I just talked to my son and the name of his ship is the BoneHomme Rashard and right now all he is wanting to do is to go to Walmart to get fresh fruit due to he has no refrig or microwave.  At least he can store that up.  He has no transportation and knows where nothing is.  Can you help?  He is down the street from the base.

Stephanie, what street is he on or nearby. Is he at the 32nd St Naval Station, or the 2nd St Logistics and Supply command? Give me an idea where he is at and I can better direct him to the nearest market, a Walmart is not nearby as far as I know. But there are plenty of produce markets and corner stores. If you could, give me the closest location that he is at like a cross street or which station he is at or hotel name, and I can find for him a market within walking distance, or a short taxi jaunt. I will give him the safest walking route for him as well.

I hope this helps. I'll check in every half hour Stephanie to see if you have any info.

By the way, what is he doing the week after Christmas, does he have any down time?

Could it be the USS Bonhomme Ridhard? It's a very large amphibious assault ship and they would have a galley. Maybe the galley just isn't open since their in port. I would think that they're serving meals. Maybe a couple of those guys could share a cab and it wouldn't cost so much that way.

I agree, I didn't realize he was that close to base, they are well supplied there, from food to dvd players, that have it all.

Thanks John thank you for making it clearer to me so I can converse with him better.  God Bless You
