Navy Dads

Hello and Happy New Year, Gentlemen.

My Son at 27 decided to join up with the the goal of being an SECF once completing A and B schools. He has a College degree, took the ASVAB, did well, and enlisted last Spring. He continued to work at his job right up until leaving for Boot. He went to boot on 21 November and was scheduled for PIR on 27th Jan, '12. He was in shape when he started Boot, he's never had a weight problem, always been athletic. Unfortunately he had a problem with his right knee one day doing PT. Long story short, the Navy has decided to discharge him and he's been moved to Ship 5. He will be able to re-enlist in 6 months (he was told) with a waiver. He wants to re-enlist very badly. He has to wait to see Legal which will be a few more days due to the holidays. My questions are:

  • We're worried his injury might be permanent. Would he be able to get treatment at a VA facility?
  • Is he eligible for the TAMP coverage?
  • His previous employer said he would still have a job if something happened, don't they have to keep his job open for him ?(Under USERRA)

Thanks and here's hoping that 2012 will be a better year for all of us.

Regards, Hammer

Usually you must graduate from Boot Camp before VA Coverage would kick in for disabilities.

Hammer, thats a bitter pill to swallow. I feel for you. If your son want to re-enlist. Wait out the time. Get the knee fixed, I doubt it is a permanent injury. Go to and orthopedic surgeon and get his Knee looked at. Sometimes the fix is as easy as an arthroscopy, a quick and non-invasive way to repair a problem. however, I figure he wont have insurance coverage. Might need to work for a while so he can get coverage. Just hang in there. hopefully it will all work out in the end for you son.

Hammer how is your son doing man ?
I have a hard time believing that an injury sustained during boot camp is not covered by the VA. To my way of thinking, it would be wise to see a lawyer if any REMF pencil pusher tells him otherwise.
