Navy Dads

I just got a call from my son he said he just got a DUI while going on base. He is being told that he is going to be thrown out of the Navy. Is there any truth to this or are they trying to scare him. As far as I know this the only infraction he has had. Would they do this or would they try to councel him first. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Worried Navy Dad

Sorry to hear about this, I would hope his Chain of Command would stand behind him. Years past at some bases they would be referred to drug and alcohal counceling. Could lose driving privilages on base. Some bases have juristictions referred to local authority "Off-Base". Provided its a first offense. There is a good chance they are trying to scare him. On the other hand every Command and Base has its regulations as well as security requirements. Someone in a Top Secret Job vs another may have different results as well. Good Luck!! The cost of the taxi has always been the safest decision.....
John,

It all depends on his command. More than likely he will get 60 days restriction, half months pay plus two, rank reduction, and worst case scenario discharged. None of these are good but I've heard of other Sailors getting DUI's and have been able to stay in the Navy. I hate to hear what your son is going through. I do know if he got the DUI on base it is better than him getting it off base. Hopefully they are just scaring him straight. Keep us posted on how this go's.

So sorry this happened, tell him to stay encouraged and good luck to you all
The Military is tough on this exact thing!! I was an MP in the Army and you rec an article 15, 45 days pay cut in half and extra duty and were referred for counseling. I know the Navy comes down hard on this also. He may have hurt his chances for advancement into certain programs in the future. He will probably be given a warning if it happens again they could dishonorably discharge him. He better not let it happen again. Some learn the hard way. He knew if had been drinking he should not drive! Bottom line..He was lucky he did not have an accident and kill someone. You have to look at it that way! He may have not had enough to impair him but he did have enough to fail the test and get a DUI! Thats all it takes. Good luck to him!
