Son to leave for Navy Boot Camp Oct 28th, what to expect?

Our son leaves for boot camp on Oct. 28th. We are very proud and also starting to feel very sad. We are very new to this and are going through many emotions. Any advise or help would be great. Mansfield, Ohio

Tyler called about an hour ago and has been medically discharged for his eyes. He was checked 3 times at MEPS and had a med wavier for his eyes. Also he said it could take 2 - 3 weeks for him to be released from Great Lakes. What is this about?? Waiting for answers from some big wigs in the Navy tomorrow. What a joke, he has been a DEP for more than 6 months. Its a sad day
You have got to be kidding me? he should have been checked 20 times over before they would ever let him go to basic. I know that they would not even take our daughter because of somethings that MEPS in Spokane found (some long ago medical issues). I sure would raise a fuss with those you can

He was disqualified at his first trip to MEPS then they checked him 2 more times and he was granted a waiver for his eyes and was accepted into the Navy. Someone somewhere has screwed this up and now he has to wait 2-3 weeks before we can pick him up. I have talked to his recruiter and supposedly they are talking with some big wig to try and reverse the seperation (unlikely) I just cannot believe he worked as hard as he did for 8 m0nths like any other DEPER only to find out that his eyes were never correct or approved. The Dr. at basic told him today that he should have never been shipped to GL. Unreal

I would be on the phone to the Zone Chief (above the recuriter) this is just not right and then to basically keep him there for 2-3 weeks that is nuts.

We received a letter from Tyler with his Div. # Ship # address and graduation date. It is the Navy's loss that he wont be able to serve because the Navy screwed up over the past 8 months. I recommend to those dads that have sons or daughters that are DEP to make personal contact with the recruiter and demand them to confrim all is correct with medical, dental and all paperwork.
I am past this phase now but when I saw your post, I felt your pain. I was a single father who had his first son leave for bootcamp in Aug. He graduated on 10/16/09. I thought I was strong but the separation cut right through me. I didn't get my first call from him until day 4 which tore me apart. The next call was three weeks later. You never know what day or time they will call. The dreaded 'box' came back with his belongings and devastated me again. I can only suggest you stay tuned to this site every night and search for his division and ship number for fellow parents. Go to the PIR no matter what! Devon is waiting for his school to start now. He got a new T-Mobile Blackberry and we Text, Email, share pictures every day and it still hurts but the Navy is doing him good and he is having the time of his life. Enjoy the ride.
Thom,
I am so sorry for your son and you and your family. I'll just say that I, for one, am extremely proud of your son for his commitment and intent. It takes a very special young man to put his life on the line to help protect our country and I applaud you and your wife for raising this youngster. Of course all of us will be hoping that the Navy reconsiders this decision but in the event that he comes home please let him know his intention to serve makes us so very proud and appreciative.

Thank you, Mr. Hughes
