Hello everyone, I am new to NavyDads— but I am proud to announce my son will be leaving for RTC within 6 days! I've read a lot about my sailor is to expect and what he should bring. I just have a couple of questions regarding the changes and concerns he and I have for his new experience.
Firstly, he is joining as a part of the AECF/NAT program. Will we be able to visit during his time in AIT after BT? Or if not, will be be able to travel at all on holidays to home?
Additionally, he's told me that he knows that there is a SECRET security clearance requirement for AECF. He had an investigation interview around 3 months ago and hasn't heard back since. I recall no news is good news. However, is his clearance completed before boot camp or after? Will they tell him if he has to change rates prior to shipping? I expect he will be fine, but I want to make sure he gets to pursue the rate he wants.
Lastly, we haven't been sure. Does the recruiter bring him to the hotel before MEPS? Or are parents allowed to do that if they wish?
Thanks for all of the help! I'd love to hear answers through your experiences in the matter!

Let's see if I can help....As your Son begins A School, he will "Phase up" over a period of weeks. This means that he gets privileges back...i.e. being able to wear civilian clothes, being able to leave the Base for liberty, phone and computer privileges, etc. You will be able to visit him on weekends once he reaches this level. Many A Schools close down for a period at Christmas time, so he may be able to travel home then (at his own expense!).
His Security Clearance will be finished before he begins Basic. This ensures his eligibility for his Rating. He will know if he doesn't get it.
Finally, the Recruiter usually delivers him to the hotel the night before MEPS. You can attend the Oath Ceremony the next day. He will then be whisked away for his trip to RTC and you will not see him until PIR in Chicago.
