that about the way it is....better to have them done at RTC than cruising around in the middle of the ocean with no support medical facilites available.

We purposely left them alone so the Navy would take care of it. LOL

My son and other had theirs pulled at boot camp also. Explanation was as stated before, they would rather do it there with all the medical support than in a sick bay aboard ship.

Very interesting. That can be a painful experience. Wonder how they handle it and keep up with training?

usually get one or two SIQ days...and killer drugs!!!!

We actually had our son's wisdom teeth extracted prior to his leaving for RTC. Yes, it was an expense for us which I had mixed feelings about paying for. However, my ex-wife and I discussed it and felt that it might be preferable to have it done before he left to get it "out of the way". The oral surgeon said that the Navy would extract wisdom teeth before deploying anyone, regardless.

The upside for us and my son was that we could select the surgeon who we had confidence in. We chose to have him use a general anesthetic, rather than just local (not sure if the Navy uses general or just local). In addition, we could provide a bit more TLC for the post-op.

The downside is that we basically incurred an expense (even after insurance) that we otherwise would not have had to incur since this procedure would be taken care of by the Navy. I really can't imagine recruits having to deal with the post-op healing during boot camp, but I guess they make the necessary provisions. Another issue was that we scheduled the surgery a bit closer than I would have liked to his leaving for RTC. However, by the time he shipped out, he was pain free and had no problems.

It all depends on the xrays, if they are impacted and pose a problem, consider them gone.. I didn't have mine pulled until after i was in about 10 yrs. Had orders to a Sub Base, and their dentist don't like seeing wisdom teeth at all. Then all 4 of mine were history as well.
