Good for him. In Navy lingo rate = rank or pay grade. Rating is MOS or job description.
Some of the Navy's ratings are under manned. These are the ratings that may have an enlistment bonus and in some cases a better chance to advance.
He will still have to meet certain standards...command approval, physical or PT standards, and he still may have to take the advancement exam and pass it to be advanced. Here is a link to the the rating descriptions.

Chuck, I talked to Nick the other day and he told me he was advised there is 100% advancement to E-4 in the GM career field. Who am I to second guess him. Hope he is right. I spent 4 years in the Air Force in the 60's the NAVY is a new animal for me. Gary T.

Sorry I was thinking March and typed January instead. I have no doubt he will make E-4 before his enlistment is up. He is still planning on reenlisting. He is aware it may take time. Gary T.

Chuck, this will be Nicks first test. If he doesn't make it he will try again in I believe it is January. He has received information on what to study. It is unknown how many E-4's there are in the GM field. If he doesn't make it I am sure he will not be disappointed. Everyone has to spend his time. Thanks for the information, it was good reading. Gary,
Here is a web site that has information about how Navy promotions work.

Gary,
Has Nick taken the test before? Andrew has taken the E-4 exam several times. His rating is overmanned at this time and the scores have to be high to gate the promotion. Andrew has gotten a PNA (Passed Not Advanced) each time.
You can pass but if there are only so many billits or places to promote into. So the fewer the billlits the higher the score must be to be advanced. Andrew has raised his score each time that he took the test. We also have our fingers crossed.
Lot of sailors pass the test on the first try and get advanced. There have been a number advanced that I have read about on this site!

Well Chuck, yes he will return to Hawaii the end of this month. He is scheduled to test for E-4 in September (fingers crossed) He also has been talking to his command about attending elevator school . Used to carry munitions to the 5 inch guns. School is in Great Lakes. There is a possibility he may get to attend that one also. If nothing else he will have a lot of specialty training. Gary T.
