Well looks like I will just have to take it how it comes then. I cannot thank you enough for the information given.

Hey,
Sorry this took so long to reply, I have had a lot going on and I just now got the chance to sit down and write.
The quality of your grades might affect your grades it might not. In my class they told us where we were going to be stationed. We made up a 'dream sheet' of three platforms or places we wanted. That was given to the detailer and he chose orders for us. I don't know if your class will be different or not. I got nothing close to what I wanted and others did. That may sound depressing but I am glad I am here in Hawaii now. I like it more and more every day. You will understand this by the time you get through 'C' school... about leaving and getting new military friends if you don't know that already. Having good grades is good though. You could get advanced for being top of the class. It has its perks but I can not be sure that it will help you get your 'dream' place.
AE or AT? You will know in bootcamp at some point. If you don't find out before you receive your rating badge for your uniform you will know then.
As for what you need for studying... I am not going to go into too much detail here but after bootcamp you will go to ATT, 'A' school, and 'C' school. ATT is a computer based learning program and it is all in the lessons on the computer in the class rooms. If you would like to learn more about something you don't understand in class just Google it and should do. 'A' and 'C' have books and homework from which to learn. For ATT and 'A' school a book like "electronics for dummies" book would be fine. It's not hard information in the classes but if you know nothing of electronics than that would be a good thing to read. If you already know electronics than you will be good to go.
Being away from you wife and the little one will be something that will happen. Most likely six to seven months at most for deployment. I have been in two years and I have not been out yet. I have my first one later this year. I am sorry but she cannot come with you when you are deployed even land based.
Let me know if there is anything else of which you can think...

So I think I missread that...... when you say I will not escape being away...... when I am away, where will she and the infant live? When I'm deployed will they be able to live with me as long as I am not aboard a ship?

I cannot thank everyone enough for all the information and respect given to me.
Andrew- I am glad to hear you enjoy your job and I hope to enjoy it as well. My wife and I really want to travel and it is not the getting away from home that will bother me, as long as she is where I hang my hat at night once I receive my PCS i will be happy. We both love to travel and If I were single I would actually try to board ship as much as possible to see as much of the earth as possible.
Q's
Does the quality of my grades and/or my performance in A school effect how many choices i will have?
When will I find out when I know if I will be an AE or AT?
If Q1 is yes.... do you recommend any other materials aside the Navy Basic Electronics book?
Thank you in advance and I will be proud to serve with and for good people such as all of yall

Hey Joshua,
Well strait up you will not escape being away. You can however try and get different platforms (the aircraft) on which you will work. P-3s, which is the platform I am on right now, deploy 6 or so months at a time. They are land based planes and so no ships are involved. Most other aircraft deal with being on ships. I have never been on a ship but this platform is more laid back than ship life is from my understanding. I am an AE and from my experience I have become to love my job. I would not be worried about being away from the family. I can see your concern and not wanting to leave them, but they should be proud to have the man in their life in the navy. From where I stand right now I am not married, but I will say that I would do a tour on a carrier just to do it. It has to be one of the greatest experiences in the US Navy. If you have any more questions fire away and I will answer what I may.

Wow you people are so helpful. I'm glad to see people are so intrested in helping answer questions to total strangers. This is one of the many reasons i feel no problem or grief in joining the service. Thank you to all!

Joshua,
There are no garantees where you will end up. My son did not know any thing about his command till he was close to finishing AE "A" school in Pensacola. He was thinking aircraft carrier, but was given orders to land based air craft in Hawaii.
His name is Andrew and he is a member of this group. Ask him.

Hello, I am currently in D.E.P. with the Navy to be shipped out to BC May 20 2010, My rate is AV, which I am told will turn into AE or AT. I recently got married and just found out i have a child on the way. I honestly cannot wait to get into the Navy, but i do not want to leave my wife and infant behind for months on end. Can someone give me some advice on what I might be getting into? Or if there is a chance i will not be stuck on a ship?

Yep, I am a Skinny Dragon! I went through boot camp and didn't fully understand what my job was until I got to 'A' school and Pensacola, FL. I also went to 'C' school in Whidbey Island, WA. (That is a different story entirely, but anyway...) After being in VP-4 for almost a year now I would not go back and pick another rate. Its my favorite.
