Thanks Bob and Larry. I'll copy and paste your comments in my letter to my son tonight, maybe it will shed a little light on whats going on. I can't imagine the scuttle flying his ship right now. I guess they took all the AECF rates to a classification area earlier this week and offered them Master of Arms or a Criptic Rate of some sort. He choose to stay with the AECF rate.

John is currently on hold after finishing A school. He thinks it will be about a 3 month wait for orders. I will post here when he gets his orders so the rest of you have an idea of how long.

I just talked to Rosie. She says that the sailors coming out of boot are still classing up relatively quickly but that the holdup seems to be on the other end. She is set to graduate from A school next month but doesn't expect to get orders for C school until next March. This is obviously disappointing news if true for a couple of reasons. First, it means she will have to endure another Chicago winter when she might have otherwise been in San Diego. Second, one's skills tend to atrophy if they aren't used. She's liable to forget a lot of what she has learned just sitting around doing nothing but clean the ship and stand watch for four months. I don't know whether the Navy makes any effort to keep skills sharp while sailors are waiting for assignment. I would think that they would, but what do I know?

Sounds like a long stay on the Enterprise to me. I will ask my daughter if she knows anything about it.

My son is currently in boot camp and has found out in week 5 that the AECF rate has been overbooked and his schools will be delayed for 6-12 months.
Does anyone have any helpful information about this and how it may effect him after boot camp?

Actually, what we get on the dream sheet is 3 slots to put down requests. These can be as vague or specific as we want. For example, I know one guy who put down "Norfolk, East Coast, DDG." And my neighbor had "Overseas, Europe, Comms." The detailer and ET...is it ET2 or ET1 Marshall?...try to fit as many of the criteria we specify, starting from high-grade and giving them (him, in my class) the closest thing they have to what he wants.

We have a full listing on our web page through NKO of NEC's available. When the students are at that point, we as staff members, do our very best to give them as much information as possible. Unfortunately, since many of our C schools are taught in multiple locations, it is up to the detailer on which one they will be sent to. There is quite a bit of information available to the students in assisting them to make educated choices, whether it is for school, type of ship and information about them, or location, and many of our students utilize those resources. But ultimately, it comes down to needs of the Navy first and dream sheets second.
