Ive also started a SKYPE account its enternet phone service, FREE face to face video, audio and just straight chat... Cheaper than a phone call any day....

oh yeah....for the most part they have e-mail, though that can be spotty at times and also depends on security conditions...When Eric was on cruise and Karzi visited the Roosevelt there was no e-mail for a few days prior to his boarding the carrier...didn't want any security leaks. Don't expect much contact and it will be spotty at times--- there is always snail mail, but that can be pretty slow and spotty also. And a warning...cell costs from places like Dubai can be pretty extreme....though it was nice to hear the boy when he called on Christmas morning he told me later his cell bill about knocked him out!!

To send email from at sea, the captain needs to turn off the radar so the burst transmission can reach the satellite. He does this about three times a day, five minutes each. Or at least, that's what I had heard while at boot camp.

I was under the impression that they had some limited e-mail access even when ship board.

Paul - When they are on cruise is there any communication with home at all?

I think these young men and women are getting the wrong idea of the Navy right now. You're right that out on ship they won't have these little luxuries!

Wait until you go on cruise...you likely won't have internet access for a good portion of the 7 months...Facebook?...fa-get-a-bout-it!! Eric and Kat were both pretty glad to get to the US and "regular" 'net access.....

When they get to their permanent ships there will be one wired internet connection in each room. John just purchased an air card for his laptop this weekend because of the limited bandwidth on the wired connection. As far as I can tell they don't use the internet for any of their classes and do have access to a wireless connection in the lounge area in each ship.

Jeez, you'd think the Navy would have Wi-Fi available on the ships as a matter of course. Even McDonalds has Wi-Fi now! Maybe they're worried about security or something.
