So, I haven't heard from FC1 Officer in some time. I deleted all the info here because it is probably wildly out of date. When I can get more current information I will post it here again. I'll see if my son can get me some new information.

Thanks Theresa, enjoy every minute with Wes.

As far as the housing question, usually until he checks in they probably won't be able to tell him much especially this far in advance.  I have not heard of any issues with the barracks at DamNeck, I only hope they have built new ones since my hubby was there in 85  :-)

Ohhh that grandbaby...just incredible!

Vicki, Mary, Jim & All - an early Merry Xmas to you all.  We are headed to the grandparents soon to show Wes off!  It will be nice to have him in the car all to ourselves for awhile!

Jim - I went to get Wes' orders (five pages of things I don't really understand!).  Wes had the same DNEC1 & 2, also.  Since Chris makes it out to C school first, keep us posted on everything! My sailor gets to experience another GL winter before being transferred in April - oh fun!

Mary - His orders say to contact the base for his housing needs, and they also give a number for a place beside the base.  When should he do that - now, later?  How is that new precious grandbaby?

I think in this case it will actually make sense for him to price things out in Va at least.  Mass insurance is VERY expensive.  The car will be in his name either way...

Thanks for the info.

oh about the two DNECs - hubby said it is primary and secondary and that it's probably not unusual for the gun schools.

Our take has always been the more schools, the longer the schools...the better.

Jim,

Just a suggestion, I was a Navy wife for over 10 years and we never registered the car where we were stationed.  Legally whatever state you live in - is the legal home of record.  He does not need to register the car in VA unless it makes sense.  We were stationed in California for alot of our shore duty, insurance and tags were very pricey.  We kept our cars insured and tagged in Michigan and just renewed the tags each year.  He is allowed to do this legally.

Our daughter and her hubby is currently doing this in NY state and I only wish our son could register his Jeep here but he bought it in Hawaii so his tags and insurance were done there.

Do some homework on this but legally he can keep his current license, voter's regist, car tags and insurance at his home of record.

IF the car is registered in YOUR name - some bases are sticky about that and often will require an affidavit that he is authorized to drive the car.  He will need to make sure everything is in order to get base decals.

Chris can call the pass and id office in DamNeck if he has questions about the decals or getting his car on base.

He's got a bit of homework to do for the vehicle thing.  He's always had access to a car at home, but this will be HIS car ;)...so he's going to have to figure out whether he should register/insure in Mass, or in Va.

and then go from there.  My guess is that insurance is cheaper in Va, but he'll have to figure that out on his own.

That's not that unusual for FC's is it?...to fill two jobs?

Comment by Jim Butler on December 21, 2010 at 12:36pm

Ok...that makes sense ;)  Thanks for digging into that...info is hard to come by.

Okay Jim,

Nothing too exciting.  The D just stands for ...

DNEC means the designated NEC you are assigned to fill at the ship.  So if there is a DNEC1 and a DNEC 2 it means there are two different NEC's he has to fill.  So kind of doing the work of two people.

He is right, much more hands on, lab work, instructor based program and small classes.

I have an email out to a very trusted friend about those codes.
