So, I haven't heard from FC1 Officer in some time. I deleted all the info here because it is probably wildly out of date. When I can get more current information I will post it here again. I'll see if my son can get me some new information.

don't expect much from the airlines...last year my son and I flew Norfolk to Tucson via Chicago on Southwest.....he in whites....they could have given a crap less and we had to sit several rows apart due to crowds....

Theresa - that sounds like a really great Christmas tree in the works! Yes, expect dress blues for that flight home which could them an opportunity to be bumped to first class seating if space is available :-)

First deployments will just depend on which ship they get. Some ships could be in the yard for maintenance, some ships could be deployed when your son (s) join them and some could just be sitting in port waiting for that next deployment.

When they get their orders, they will have a NLT date (report no later) so generally they will get a chance to take some leave before reporting to their ship. Our son had 33 days of leave available on the books and took 28 days before reporting - his ship was in the yards so it was 10 months before he did his first deployment.

Love coming home and hopping on the computer to hear about Navy this and that:) I didn't know they will be wearing their dress blues home!!!!! Our airport has asked Blue Star Moms to put stars on the airport tree with our military sons/daughters photos. That will be fun to show him that tree & his photo!!

Jim - I was hoping for a long C school, too, say like, a year!! My son's orders say C school will be six months long - not much longer than your son's. I wonder how long it takes for them after that to receive their first deployment?

I agree with your hubby :)

Yep.
But my old sailor hubby would say...
Back in the days when ships were made of wood and men of iron...what do you mean they live in barracks?!!! They are sailors why aren't they living on the ship?!!

He was stationed in Japan in his junior years and they lived on the ship then until they were e5s.

Can't wait. I didn't realize that E5s had to move off base...

He joined in 2008
Graduated from A school two years ago on Dec. 08
Graduated from C school in July 09
Reported to the ship Aug 09

Some think he has made it to E5 quickly but this was his 3rd time testing. The quota really have become quite tight the last few years with the job market.

ETs really had a tough go of it this cycle - only 8% that test were advanced to E5.
Aegis FCs were advanced at 26% of those that tested
and non Aegis FCs were advanced at 40%

Your son(s) will find out the evals are a critical component of the test and our son was able to take the test the first time after being on the ship for three days. It was a good experience for him but he had no eval at that stage so although he passed the test, he got what is referred to as PNA (passed not advanced) when this happens they do get a couple of points applied to the next exam date.

The tests are given twice a year - March and September. It won't be long before your son(s) and daughter (s) are stressing over it!

In my son's eyes ---- it's just woo-hoo, I made E5!
