So, I haven't heard from FC1 Officer in some time. I deleted all the info here because it is probably wildly out of date. When I can get more current information I will post it here again. I'll see if my son can get me some new information.

Clay - I'll have to look into the Master Boiler's Mate patch. I would be willing to bet the only place to get your hands on one would be Ebay or something like that. I have a retired Chief Boiler Technician that works here. I will ask him as well.

Clay - SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! =) I love the snow! Grew up with it, played in it, threw it at people and had a blast while doing it!

Mary - Petty Officer Indoc is held every month at the USS Cole (BEQ 6301) and it is a rundown of the things that are expected of a petty officer. We encourage our students to attend before leaving because there is no guarantee that their 'C' school will hold it. That way they are not stuck waiting till they get to their ship.

Let 'em growl away ;)

Is the Petty Officer class something they can sign up for?

FC1 - That is a very good point, critical one actually! I was so used to the FCs finishing A school in a timely manner.

They also have to take the Petty Officer class and I've always heard it's better if they can take it while still in GL then at C school. FC1, perhaps you can share a few words on that? It seemed like it used to be done on a need only basis and depending on who taught it and how many E3 were in it, the class could be knocked down in a couple day.

Jim, Chris probably is aware of this --- you would be surprised how quickly they figure out their advancements :-) With the delays in getting to C school, that could be a bright spot for our students --- getting their crows before reporting to the fleet. With little to no holds, our son did have his about 60 days before reporting to the ship. It is a good thing to do but some rates will quietly growling at them for being petty officers without ever stepping on a ship...ah but that's the benefit of two years of schooling!
