So, I haven't heard from FC1 Officer in some time. I deleted all the info here because it is probably wildly out of date. When I can get more current information I will post it here again. I'll see if my son can get me some new information.

Jim, Kudos to your son for stepping up for the drill team. Going the extra mile as a junior sailor has it's rewards.

Our son's ship is currently underway and that is preparing me (like it or not) for his first deployment. He did join the honor guard team at Dahlgren and a visible benefit is - they only pulled duty every eight days vs. four. More importantly he performed at some nice events and as a bonus he earned a Letter of Appreciation (a couple of times) and was coined by an Admiral.

We are awaiting the E5 test results to post but since he did not have a ship eval when he tested, he suspects that he will PNA (Pass not advanced).

Things are pretty quiet in here lately!
From our side...Chris had the opportunity to go with some other students to the Arena Football League game in Chicago, which he thoroughly enjoyed. A guy had his son there, and had to leave early, so he approached Chris and his friend and thanked them for serving, then gave them his front row tickets. Chris was very grateful, and had a great time at the game. He has also decided to try out for the precision drill team. Not sure how that works once he classes up, but I'm sure school management has it figured out.
He said they also marched in the "Liberty Day" parade. He said that as they marched past a group of WWII vets, the vets all saluted the sailors...which made quite an impact on Chris. Really brought home the fact that he's part of something that is completely different and above anything his friends back home are involved in. He was amazed that THEY were saluting HIM...felt it really should have been the other way around.

Sounds like he's really getting on track.

Happy Mom's Day to all the Mom's out there! Hope our sailor remembers to call home...lol He's been having a tough time with a break-up of a long-distance, long-time relationship, and as we all know, nothing much you can do but offer moral support and watch them go through it.
Probably a good thing it's happening while he's on hold...would be a major distraction while in school.

Speaking of holds, any update FC1, on how long the A School hold is running?

Thanks,
Jim

We're on our way to see our sailor this weekend during one of his scheduled monthly 3 day leaves from A school (Mary is right - it's more like 2.5 days). Just so happens to be mothers day so it's even better.

Thanks Mary, no we're from the Noroflk area so that's more than 300 miles,. I was just wondering if he had some time between ATT and A if maybe he could come home for a weekend. It's in week 3 of ATT school and I didn't know how long the holds were, as you said I know don't even try to guess the holds lol - It's all good, just missing him abit this week we skyped last night for about 1 hour and that does make things better. But great tip about not using too much we definately want leave for Christmas. Thanks

noelsnavymom - how far does your sailor need to travel on the weekend? If he has phased up, he can travel up to 300 miles (or is it 250 miles?) on the weekends without taking leave.

Leave during A school used to be a no-no but I do know other sailors that have been able to take a few days leave while on hold this past year. Keep in mind, they earn 2.5 days leave a month and your son does not want to go in the hole for leave as he will want to use it during the holidays if he is still in GL at the end of the year. Taking leave before C school is common practice IF there is time before the C school program begins.

I don't even TRY to guess on the hold situation!!

FC1 said last week that it was running about 4-6wks.
No idea on the leave question...

Oh and if on hold waiting for A school can the sailor request leave for a weekend or do they have to stay there until completion of A school and get some leave between A and C school?

Does anyone know are the holds from ATT to A school still about 4 weeks or has that changed?
