So, I haven't heard from FC1 Officer in some time. I deleted all the info here because it is probably wildly out of date. When I can get more current information I will post it here again. I'll see if my son can get me some new information.

$40k in 72...wow, wonder what that is in today's world?

Back in 72, we were told that the cost of a TS clearance was roughly $40K.

Security clearances represent a huge investment in $$$ and time. I'm sure that there's a percentage of cruits that enter DEP that never make it into actual service, and more still that don't make it through Boot. That would represent a significant waste, when the armed forces are doing everything they can to save every nickle.

ou are right Andrew, the Navy has made a good investment in him at this stage and his clearance will get squared away.

Like you I thought that was all done before boot camp, I mean our son was in DEP for nine months...why wouldn't it be done?!!! When he reported to the Aegis school, it still wasn't done and we have to get some documents over to him but they quickly resolved whatever the snag was before his classes actually started. Our son was born in Japan and someone implied that what his delay was even though it was at a US Naval Hospital.

I understand the Navy does a cursory check before they go to bootcamp as far as criminal offenses but does the clearance after they report.

Thanks, Paul.
He's so close to being finished school and someone told him he might lose his position, since he was supposed to have his clearance before starting A school. I think it was someone pulling his chain, but he immediately called me with concern. I told him to relax, that the Navy has invested too much money in him to drop him for something that is out of his control ... I hope I'm right!

Andrew - Clearance backlog could be the problem. I know when I went for my TS that there was a 6 month backlog. Just depends on how many get piled on a desk at one time. Best he can do is go through the chain and see what can be done to get it finished.

Well, my son just found out that his security clearance has not been done. This won't affect his ability to finish A or C school, will it? Has anyone else's son/daughter had a similar issue? Why would they have dropped the ball on this? I thought that was done before he got to boot camp.

Mary - Students are welcome to go on leave so long as they understand that if orders come out and they are not here to pick, they get what we give them.

Larry - You are quite welcome. We strive to teach our students not only how to be Fire Controlmen, but better sailors and better people. Life here forces most to grow up fast, otherwise they don't make it. It's good to hear feedback from parents and to know that we made a difference for at least one sailor.

Not only is it hard on the Sailors but on the folks back home as well. We did not have to wait long after ATT2 But it seemed long. But he is home on leave and we are all enjoying it now. He leaves the end of this week for C School and it will be another long wait for us again.
Thank You FC1 for the Sailor you sent home to us. I hope you are as proud of what you have done as we are!!!! A Job Well Done!!!!!

That's hard when they graduate and have to hang out for so long - hoping the orders start flowing soon. I don't remember C school orders ever being so backed up before.

Will leave be authorized for those waiting on orders if they have leave time available?
