So, I haven't heard from FC1 Officer in some time. I deleted all the info here because it is probably wildly out of date. When I can get more current information I will post it here again. I'll see if my son can get me some new information.

Hey all, it seems many here are concerned about the excessive "hurry and wait" syndrome the Navy has. It is a fact and will not go away. It is even more so now with so many recruits going through the system. They are overwhelmed in every school. Many new sailors are waiting up to 6 months before class up because they do not have the instructors to teach that many classes. The Navy was not prepared for the influx due to the economy. So it becomes a first come first served basis. My oldest son is in the ATT portion at this time (night classes.) He waited over 2 months for his to start.

Roger - In the military we call all of the sitting around hurry up and wait. Pretty much everything done at their schedule, no sooner or later. It's just a fact of military life. PIR was awesome. If you have a video camera, take it. There is a lot to record. We asked Zac to order the dvd of the PIR for us. We told him we'd pay for it, but I think he just paid for it himself.

From what I've read both ET and FC are undermanned. I think there is a little more demand for ETs though. Sounds like it has been that way for at least a year. I looked at the CREO (career reenlistment objectives) list for Sep 08 and both ratings were undermanned.

Andrew - Zac mentioned something about some people having a delay in get their clearance that was setting them back some. That could be your son's friends problem.

Paul, we're checking on flights now. The whole family is going. This is all new to us and we are very excited. Not too happy to hear about the sitting around that's going on as people are waiting for A school. Hope all the kids get in as scheduled.

Mike, your son was told he's starting ATT in two weeks? I wonder what is going on with my son's friend; she graduated over a month ago and has been on hold and is expected to be there for some time. She is performing miscellaneous duties (cleaning, etc.) until they release the hold.

At pir Sam told us he was going into FC and that he thought his grad date from great lakes was sometime in may 2010. Then he is hoping for a few weeks off till he has to report to his station. He also said that he would be home for christmas and it depended on his command as to when he has to return back to GL. We ended up putting a block on his bank card to have him call home so we can tell him that his bank balance is running low.

Zac got a 95 for his ASVAB. He was happy anyways. He wanted FC. He told me he gets to break the equipment that the ETs have to fix. He didn't want to be a fixer. From reading about the FC rating I understand that they can do some minor repairs, but they call in the ETs past that. He is just glad he didn't get into the sub side of FC. He really wasn't interested in being on a sub.

Paul, my son was telling me that the AECF recruits that had ASVAB scores above 90 got orders for ET; below that got FC ... my son's is 84. As far as C school is concerned, all ET/FC sailors go to C school after A school. Some go to Virginia, some go to California ... all depends on their choice of system and class standing.

I think the hold my son was told about it for ATT, not the actual A school; still, I can't believe that it might be as long as 6 months. I've heard it could take a month or so, with a couple of weeks between classes (ATT to A school), but 6 months sounds excessive. I'll hear from him this Wednesday, so I'll report back what he tells me.

Hi Roger - Are you going to PIR? It was a blast. Sure was nice seeing Zac. He has really changed since he has been in. Reminds me of how I was when I went through Air Force bootcamp. It definitely was an exciting time in my life.

Mike - Zac did a little spending spree. He bought a few things while we were at the PIR weekend. His next payday he bought an Ipod and a broadband card for his laptop. We mailed his phone, laptop and a few other things to him after he moved off the bootcamp base. I think it is a freedom thing since they were locked up in bootcamp for so long. Now they have a little freedom so they are able to go a little nuts. Once that pre A school classes start it calms down a little. They have a bunch of basic electronics classes and some others they take before they start A school.

Andrew - I heard from Zac that FC does not have as many people going into it as ET. He said that ET had a run on students because they needed them so bad. Zac isn't sure when his class will start, but I'm betting he has a month or so. He said he will probably spend around 2 years in GL just to get out of A school. If he does well, top 10% of his class?, I think he has a chance to go to C school for further training. I think that one is in New York. I'll keep you guys updated as I hear more info.

My son's PIR was this past Friday (09-25-09) and he has orders to report to A school (across the street) this Wednesday morning at 0115. He has a friend who is approximately 4 weeks ahead of him and is FC, also. She has been put on hold for (get this) approximately 5-6 months!!! What is this all about??? She told my son that he'll probably be put on hold, too. Has anyone heard anything about this? My son thinks he's going to be stuck in Great Lakes for the best part of 2 years, based on what he has been told. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Andrew
