Jim, great advice.  I'll share that with him after PIR, don't want to distract him from that focus.  I never served, always private sector, so this is going to be an education for me and I'm looking forward to it.  One last question, how does/did your son like being an AC?  Thanks,

Gents, my son just arrived at RTC on June 2, done by July 31, then  he immediately goes to Pensacola for AC school.  Reading the thread of comments here, it seems likely he'll have to wait for classes to start.  Besides this information, does anyone have guidance based on your son's experiences at the school and subsequent deployment?  Thanks much, Mike

My son has arrived at Pensicola this week and is rather downtrodden that his school may not start until September (he was told he would only be there until September).  He is trying to settle in.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to encourage him?  I would appreciate it.

Jim, thanks or the info. I just now saw your reply. I apologize for not seeing it earlier. Yes, that's exactly what was happening. He's now in pensacola waiting to class up. Word on the street is they may have added more classes. He might class up in a month or so. I think I was more impatient than he was. Anyway thanks for the comment. I see there's not a lot of action here but if anyone out there sees this and answers back, thank you. My son has been in GL/THU for nearly 4 months since PIR. Been told many things in the beginning, 1-2 months, 3-4 months, and now 6 months before he will be cleared for AC school. I heard there a only 2 AC schools per year. The next school maybe starting in Feb. If he doesnt make it by then and gets after the school starts I heard he could be waiting there for nearly six months to class up. Is that possible? Also looking for any advice on AC school for him. Thank you, Rick from Simi Valley, Ca.

I just wanted to start this discussion because I have more questions than answers about the AC rating. My son graduates from boot camp on 8/27 and is leaving the next day for Pensacola to start AC school. I assume that since he is grad and go he starts school immediately, but from the little I have gathered on the Airdales group that isn't necessarily so. If he is indeed going to FL so quickly just to clean the head and buff the decks, it seems a bit nonsensical to limit his time with his family. Oh well, I was in the Navy 25 years ago and I guess I "understand ". We have learned that his school is 16 or 17 weeks. If he started immediately, he may be finished by Christmas and could come home on leave before proceeding to his duty station.

So here are some questions I have:

1. There are several g&g sailors in our division going to Pensacola. Would it be a charter flight? If so, out of which airport?

2. I know the P'cola area has many different commands. Where exactly do AC's live?

3. Will he be allowed to have a cell phone and computer? I want to be able to give him his cell phone before he boards a flight to FL.

4. If he can have a computer, will he be able to do some of his homework on the computer. If so, would a Mac work? (yes, we are a mac family after dealing with Bill Gates for 20+ years)
