We Render Honors to the USS Arizona

081207-N-0535P-215 PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (Dec. 7, 2008) Woody Derby, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, salutes the names of the deceased at the USS Arizona Memorial during a Prayer for Peace ceremony sponsored by the Japan Religious Committee for World Federation. The prayer ceremony followed a joint U.S. Navy/National Park Service ceremony commemorating the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The theme of this year's historic commemoration, "Pacific War Memories: The Heroic Response to Pearl Harbor," emphasizes the brave efforts of those who fought at sea, on land, and in the air, to turn the tide in the Pacific. More than 2,000 distinguished guests and the general public joined service members, Pearl Harbor survivors and their families and friends for the annual observance. We have been telling Brandon that they are predicting a cold wet winter here, so when he comes home at Christmas it will feel just like GL. Maybe we should start praying for snow just to be mean.

Cecyl, how funny!! Well, being from north central Arizona we get snow every winter. It's been enough snow to make Billy happy and not feel like he's been deprived, lol. But, when he was home from G.L. at Christmas time for the A-School holiday break, it snowed while he was here. He really complained about it saying he wanted to be able to have warm weather and wear shorts. Even though it was very cold here then, he wore his shorts anyway, lol.

Hi Paige, that is good. My wife grew up in Northern Indiana and I'm from Michigan. Brandon grew up in Arizona. All of his life he complained that it wasn't fair that we grew up with snow. He called when he stepped out of O'Hare in February and his response was "Oh my gosh!!" Of course we just laughed ourselves silly.

Hi everyone, my name is Mike just joined Navy Dads, my son Christopher has been in since April 2008 graduated in June 2008 from GL, graduated from MA-A in S A August 2008, home for 2 weeks, then to first duty station overseas. Just recently home, my wife and I hadn't seen him in a year, always by e-mail and terrible phone service but it was nice to see our son. He will be home for x-mas with new orders who knows where? It has been a roller coaster ride.

Cecyl, I have a similar story about my son as well. It was around this same time last year while Billy was in Great Lakes having recently graduated boot camp. He and a group of other sailors were outside doing their mandatory exercises. Billy and another sailor who was also from AZ were shivering like crazy. And when they were asked why they were acting that way - both of their responses were "were from Arizona!!!". Billy spent an entire winter there and said it gets so cold in the winter it hurts when you take a breath. He's thrilled to be in San Diego now!!

I thought all of you would get a laugh out of this. Brandon called Thursday night and said that he has been wearing his "P" coat already. It's been getting down to 40 at night at GL. His buddies have been giving him a hard time because it's not cold yet. He said he told them that he was from Arizona and it was cold. Won't he have fun in a couple of months.
