The prayer ceremony followed a joint U.S. Navy/National Park Service ceremony commemorating the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The theme of this year's historic commemoration, "Pacific War Memories: The Heroic Response to Pearl Harbor," emphasizes the brave efforts of those who fought at sea, on land, and in the air, to turn the tide in the Pacific. More than 2,000 distinguished guests and the general public joined service members, Pearl Harbor survivors and their families and friends for the annual observance. HooYah Jim....a PIR makes missing anything (well---almost) worthwhile. There will be other chances to meet...but you generally only get one PIR!!! Just remember that Aaron has a long Navy ourney still ahead, and NavyDads wants to be part of that journey.....stay active on the site!

Haven't posted in the AZ group since PIR, and it was an awesome weekend! The weather in Chicago last weekend was bit of a challenge, but seeing Aaron march in with his Division made our day, and our week, month, year!

Aaron was a Grad and Go, but did not have to fly out until early Saturday morning so we had all day Friday togther and met him at Midway early Saturday morning.

Tip: If you ask at the ticket counter, they will give you a "Gate Pass" so you can go through the Security checkpoint with your Sailor when he leaves, gave us about 45 minutes more time together before the flight left.

PIR was amazing, and the sense of pride and awe was only added to by the fact that the Force Master Chief who spoke also had a son in one of the graduating Divisions...my "allergies started acing up" briefly as he spoke of the pride he had in each of the young men and women who made the choice to serve their country, so I was glad I had a handkerchief on me.

Too bad we missed the picnic, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything!

Welcome John- thank you for joining the Arizona Sailors group. I'm sure we will have other events and meet-n-greets. Enjoy the group and use it to help answer questions you may have about your sailor's journey in the Navy!

Hello all,
I wish I had known about the picnic sooner. I might have been able to go with my son while he was here on his first leave. He left for Jacksonvile FL. this morning and I do now when I will see him again. this looks to be a great site and I am glad it is here. Keep up the good work.

Tom,
I'm sorry you were not able to make it to the DEP picnic. Maybe some of us can get together at a future event.

Thank you for giving us an update on how Kelly is doing at bootcamp. We know she will do good and we are wishing her well.

That is great news Tom- Kelly is on her way to PIR and I know how proud you'll be when you see her march into the drill hall.

To NavyDads_Admin and Paige,

I am sorry to have miss coming to the picnic last saturday, but I had to have repair work done to my car to replace a front wheel bearing that was going bad. My the time the sevice was to late to make the drive from Chandler. The pictures look like there was a great turnout of new recruits from Arizona that were able to come to the event.

We herad from Kelly via two letters this past week, and she doing well. She passed her swiming certification which I knew would not be a problem for her as she has been swiming since she was about 18 months old. The physical training she said tough but all the yelling at them from their instructors is getting old. But she knows there is a reason and lesson behind the drilling. She is doing well and that is a good thing right now. Have a great week everyone...Tom

I agree Paul. I'm glad ASU has decided to make ROTC part of their educational program.

Arizona State University Welcomes Establishment of ROTC Unit
Story Number: NNS090408-17
Release Date: 4/8/2009 3:17:00 PM

By Carol Hughes, special to Naval Service Training Command

TEMPE, Ariz. (NNS) -- The establishment of a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at Arizona State University (ASU) for fall 2010 was announced April 7 by the commander of Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), during a visit to the university's Tempe campus.

"We are looking forward to a long and productive relationship with Arizona State University," said Rear Adm. Cliff Sharpe, who oversees the Navy and Marine Corps ROTC programs from his NSTC headquarters at Naval Station Great Lakes.

"Many of the new and expanded academic programs at ASU in the areas of languages and culture, the humanities, sustainability, critical languages, Earth and space exploration, computing and informatics, biodesign, engineering and aerospace engineering, and many others, are a good fit with the burgeoning and dynamic naval ROTC program," said Michael Crow, ASU president.

"We are appreciative of the important role that the military plays in protecting our nation, and it is with a great deal of excitement that we welcome the Navy to our university," Crow said.

Arizona State University already is home to both Air Force and Army ROTC programs, which are housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

"This program will provide students not only with an excellent education but will also prepare them to serve as officers in the Navy," Crow added.

The NROTC program was established to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. The NROTC scholarship program fills a vital need in preparing future officers for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.

A four-year NROTC scholarship features full tuition at a select college or university, all college or university educational fees, a stipend for text books, all uniforms, up to three summer training events and a subsistence allowance for each academic month.

Plans are to have teaching and administrative staffs in place by the summer of 2010 in order to support the arrival of students in August 2010.

While on the ASU campus, Sharpe and other NROTC leaders visited with Crow, and deans and faculty from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, and the College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation. They also met with the commanders of ASU's Air Force and Army ROTC units and toured the campus, stopping at the Biodesign Institute, Decision Theater and the Flexible Display Center.

There are currently two other NROTC host units in the southwest – at the University of Arizona and the University of New Mexico. As a host, the units educate students from surrounding universities and community colleges.

For more information about NROTC, including eligibility requirements and a list of colleges and universities, visit www.nrotc.navy.mil.

Just kinda a heads up to those with sailors soon in the fleet....both Kat and Eric asked for the same thing in the care packages I sent to the carriers--- bottles of Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Compnay Picante Sauce! Both my sailors told me the food on the carriers is pretty bland and after awhile everything starts to taste the same. I sent so much to Eric that he said "half the ship is addicted to the stuff now..." and when he was down to his last bottle or two he had to keep it locked up to keep it from being used! Just a hint to you to Arizona members about possible wants from your sailors.........Paul
