The prayer ceremony followed a joint U.S. Navy/National Park Service ceremony commemorating the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The theme of this year's historic commemoration, "Pacific War Memories: The Heroic Response to Pearl Harbor," emphasizes the brave efforts of those who fought at sea, on land, and in the air, to turn the tide in the Pacific. More than 2,000 distinguished guests and the general public joined service members, Pearl Harbor survivors and their families and friends for the annual observance. Arizona Navy Week Gets Underway
Story Number: NNS090305-05
Release Date: 3/5/2009 3:30:00 PM

By Commander, Navy Region Southwest Public Affairs

PHOENIX (NNS) -- Phoenix Navy Week 2009 activities started March 4 when the commander of Navy Region Southwest provided opening remarks before the Arizona State Legislature House Committee on Military Affairs and Public Safety.

"The Navy gets tremendous support from Arizona. We have just over 7,000 active duty and Reserve Sailors that call Arizona home," said Rear Adm. Len R. Hering.

He also noted the Navy is indebted to the people of
Arizona for their commitment to supporting the sea services. During the remarks, Hering discussed the Navy's role in the national maritime strategy noting the importance of sea power and ocean areas adjacent to critical geographic areas.

"With 70 percent of the world's surface covered by ocean, and with 80 percent of the world's population living within a few hundred miles of the seacoast, and with 90 percent of the world's commerce traveling by sea, it is clear we must be focused on littoral regions," said Hering.

In discussing the span of responsibility for his San Diego-based command, Hering described his responsibilities for 10 bases and multiple facilities spread over the six states: Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California.

"This area includes some of the most extensive training ranges and test support areas in the Navy to include the linked Pacific Missile Range Facility off the Southern California Coast, inland to the China Lake Complex in the high desert," Hering noted.

Further highlighting military facilities and bases Hering said, "The training range complex geometry in the southwestern U.S. is particularly vulnerable to encroachment pressures, yet it is vital to the readiness of all branches of the armed forces.

"This linkage between the at-sea training areas off Southern California with China Lake, the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Twenty-nine Palms, Fallon and the Barry Goldwater Range here in Arizona is critical to ensuring our men and women in uniform have the opportunity to train realistically with the full range of systems they employ overseas regardless of branch of service."

In addition to describing the operational mission of Navy bases and facilities in the southwestern region, Hering talked at length about the strong environmental safeguard and restoration measures his service has in place and the importance of following sustainability and green practices.

Navy diversity and recruitment was also a major focus of Hering's comments.

"The Navy does need to incorporate the rich cultural heritage of our nation," Hering said. "We can only tap this strength if we can recruit and grow to better reflect the diversity of all our citizens.

"Our challenge is how to reach out to such a broad cross section of people and make them aware of the opportunities the Navy represents - opportunities for promotion and leadership, opportunities as an individual to make a difference. We're working on this diversity recruiting challenge, but we need help across all communities to meet our diversity objectives."

Hering closed by invoking the spirit of the crew of the battleship USS Arizona and noted what the name symbolizes.

"[USS Arizona] has been linked with the Navy as a symbol for selfless defense of our nation," the admiral said. "The spirit of dedication and vision which the Arizona Memorial represents continues to guide your Navy in our commitment to the security of our country."

Other events included in Navy Week Phoenix include meetings with elected officials, community leaders, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps students at area high schools, mothers of Sailors, band performances, Navy Leapfrog parachute team demonstrations and an athletic skills challenge run by Navy SEALs.

Thanks, Paige! We appreciate it and are hoping when we hear from Aaron this weekend he will have some good news for us. It is going to be a long week, though!

Jim,
I will be praying that all goes well for Aaron with his physical.

Billy received his verbal orders the other day. He is being assigned to a destroyer called the USS Howard (DDG-83) based in San Diego. It is just what he was hoping for, so he's very excited about it. We don't know how soon he will head for SD because he's waiting to find out when and where his C-School will be.
Please keep us posted on how Aaron is doing!
