We Render Honors to the USS Arizona

081207-N-0535P-215 PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (Dec. 7, 2008) Woody Derby, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, salutes the names of the deceased at the USS Arizona Memorial during a Prayer for Peace ceremony sponsored by the Japan Religious Committee for World Federation. The prayer ceremony followed a joint U.S. Navy/National Park Service ceremony commemorating the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The theme of this year's historic commemoration, "Pacific War Memories: The Heroic Response to Pearl Harbor," emphasizes the brave efforts of those who fought at sea, on land, and in the air, to turn the tide in the Pacific. More than 2,000 distinguished guests and the general public joined service members, Pearl Harbor survivors and their families and friends for the annual observance. Hi everyone - I retired from the Navy in 2002 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, so if anyone has general questions about life in the Navy, or what life at sea is all about - please feel free to shoot me a line.

Thanks - John

Welcome Doug ! The more effort your son puts into it now, the better he will do....make sure he is running as often as he is able...the timed run seems to be the major hurdle at RTC. I have a link in the Bootcamp group to the Trainee Guide that all recruits use at Great Lakes.....it's a 479-page PDF but worthwile reading through and studying. HooYah !!

Greetings, all. My son David signed on the dotted line a few weeks ago for a 6 year hitch as a Nuke. He's very keen on the whole thing having worked to shed some extra lbs up front so he'd be accepted. He won't report until May of next year and the local recruiting office has him and the other recruits busy every Wednesday getting up to speed on a few of the basics like learning the lingo, the Sailors Creed, and maybe most importantly, good 'ol PT.

Just got back from PIR and had a great time with my son and nephew the both are FC's and look great. My son is 19 finished boot camp as an E2 the nephew is 24 and is still E1 but both are happy. Took an Arizona Flag and stood in the stands and at Liberty call we held it up and the found us very quick. We had were able to stay until late Sunday and left early Monday so we got to spend as much time as we could with them.

My son called us yesterday from GL and already misses the AZ hot weather! He ran the 9.11 mile race in Barington with some of his shipmates yesterday and had a great time. He graduates from ATT Phase I on Monday and can't wait to class up for FC A School. We plan on visiting him in October, he told us to pack some warm clothes, can't even vision what that may feel like.

I have a son and a nephew in boot right now and PIR is 9/17 for them both. Will be going up there from AZ here to watch them both. Both are most likely to have A school at GL. So, guess I will see more snow that I have for many years.
