Navy Dads

My son is in Norfolk, VA at A school. they were told they can put in a chit for Leave for Thanksgiving. He put in his Chit over two weeks ago. It is now 7 days before he would be flying home and still no word on if his request has been granted. First they were told the requests were lost and then they were taken home by the person who was to approve them. There are about 20 plus sailors in the same situation. I have been checking airfare for the past two weeks and the delay is going to add about $400 to the cost of the ticket. If he doesen't hear something today the cost will go even higher because it will be less than 7 days lead time

My question is should my son expect this kind of BS in the future.

In a large organization, there is always some level of administrative BS. The holidays make it more obvious and dramatic for our sailors and us. In some cases, it may come down to differences between locations and commands within the location (after all it is people doing the work - some better than others).

You may want to look toward Christmas too. If the school has a stand down, and get that request moving if it is available to your son. Also be sure his command is one that does not restrict leave to one holiday or the other.

Airfairs go nuts this time of year. We finally just committed to the tickets. If we have to change them, the $100 - $150 change fee could be less than waiting for the confirmed leave and dealing with the higher prices.

hope your sailor gets his visit home . . .
Kevin, our son was in the same situation last week.He put his chit in about October 29th and as of last week it still wasn't thru the chain of command. He was not a very happy camper.I finally told him to inform his chain of command to forget about Thanksgiving and put in a chit for Christmas.Hopefully giving the chain of command almost 6 weeks, maybe they could get it done right and in time to get a decent flight cost.

To add insult to injury,a sign was placed on the doors to the chow hall that Thanksgiving dinner would be served at the chow hall, but that there would be a 10.00 dollar charge for the meal.I will not repeat what my son said about that meal deal.He was not impressed!

Best of luck!

Steve !!!!!!!!!!
Good deal Kevin....Glad to hear your son was able to make it.Got a text from James yesterday to inform me that his chit to come home on Christmas has been approved.I think it made it through the chain of command in record time!
Just have to get used to the fact that he will not always be able to come and go to suit us{:-(
You all have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your time with your son....

Steve !!!!!
