Charles, now I know what your talking about. Understand Core and Strands are at various levels. Your son is a GSE. All of the snipe ratings (DC, EM, EN, EOD, GSE/GSM, HT, IC, MM, MR ) go through the basics CORE together. Then they are farmed out to the specific rating they chose.
Example:
Basic Engineering Common Core classes teaches introduction to technical documentation, basic mechanical theory, safety precautions and programs, alignment and operation of piping systems and equipment, hand tools, precision instruments, lubricants, bearings, couplings, gears, valves, pumps and the Maintenance Material Management System (3M) which is required by all engineers.

I will post the GSE listing in the above discussion section and maybe you can see what I'm talking about.... I want you to compare them with the MR and MM rating I posted in the same section....

Need help. My wife has wore a US Navy anchor since our son enlisted 16 years ago. He has now made Senior Chief and I wanted to get her a new one with the Senior Chiefs' star. I have been unable to find one.
Does anyone know if they make a senior chief's anchor?

If you know please post or send a mail to NO1REF@fuse.net

Thanks

Thanks ,He sort of explained that but I was still unclear as to what that was. He being "gsm", will he go to "C'' after this? and where will he most likely go next? He is still in GL. for his school.

Certain "A" schools divides the "A" School training courses into two or more segments called Core and Strand.
"A" School Core courses include general knowledge and skills training for the particular rating, while "A" School Strand courses focus on the more specialized training requirements for that rating and a specific equipment (or even aircraft for that matter), based on the student’s fleet destination. Why teach a sailor about helo's if he's going to an Air squadron for P3 Orion's...
Strand training immediately follows Core training and is part of the "A" School. Upon completion of Core and Strand "A" Schools, graduates could attend "C" School for additional specific training.

Charles,

I could be way off but the only "strand" I know of is Silver Strand Training Complex (SSTC) in San Diego, Ca.

Talked to my son yesterday,he said he should graduate "A" school late
Sept. but would probably be there another month for "strand". What does that mean?

Not all A schools are right out of boot camp. They have to have a class opening. My sons friend was considered a striker and spent a year on a small boy out of Mayport Fl. He left 3 months ago for Great Lakes. Now back in Mayport on ship and trained. I think there may have been a time frame for the school listed in the contract. I know he does not have it with him. The seperation from family makes it hard. Young and recruits don't have the support they would have at home. I hope he didn't feel to pressured and sign off on the contracted school. 0 years ago I saw this happen to several girls in boot camp. Best of luck to him and you hoping he gets to talk to you soon.

I believe your son can leave the Navy after boot camp because he has a IT contract, unless there is something disqualifying him. Keep your cool and advise your son to do the same. Look for more information at Nukeworker. Many current and former Navy folks there will give you very good information. Direct, accurate, and no BS. They helped me understand how the Navy operates. I hope everything works out for you and your son.

Thanks Craig for the info and concern. Its' tough being a single Dad and having been involved in every aspect of my sons' upbringing. When you are so used to be able to call the Principal, or the counselor,to get answers, this is a new avenue I'm heading down. I just wish there would have been a way to talk to him, specifically about the undesignated route. But it's to late now. And who knows, he still could have gone a different direction when he went through Classifications. I have to put all my strength in my Higher Power, and believe that He has a plan for all of us, even my son. We all have had to live with the decisions we've made in our lives, and I'm sure my son will be a better person for the decisions he is making in his. God Willing. Thanks again Craig.
