They are called "Gators" because of their ability to move swiftly through water and over land, like an alligator. Sailors in the Gator Navy are the first ones on the beach and the last ones off. They can give you a nasty bite in or out of the water.

Why are the amphibious assault ships called Gators?

Thomas, anyone with a sailor in bootcamp can stay at the Navy Lodge (GL only). You sailor does not have to be with you. You can also use the Base Exchange even though you don't have an ID card too (GL only). Goto www.Navy-Lodge.com

Can anyone with a graduating sailor stay at the Navy Lodge at Great Lakes? Does the sailor have to be with them to do so?

STA-21 deadline is 1 July every fiscal year. STA-21 packages can take months to complete. The age limitation is community dependent. There is a STA-21 group here at Navy Dads.
My son was selected for STA-21 last November. I'd be happy to help if I can.

Thanks this was just what I needed. My son is 25 and was told he is to old. Guess the site with a first class in the picture puts that to rest. IT is to late to apply for this year. I was hoping he would be chosen next year.

This is the website for the "Seaman to Admiral" program https://www.sta-21.navy.mil/

Does anyone know about the seaman to admiral program or where I can find dependable information?

This may seem like a very odd post/question/request on this site, but I'm going to just throw it out there and see what comes back at me. I'm a published fiction writer and I've got and idea for a story, but I need some assistance. I want to write about a Navy SEAL who is blinded during the course of a mission and his journey "Out Of The Darkness". I was wondering if there would be anyone interested in helping me with the technical aspects as well as personal perspectives on fictional senerios in the story. I could base it on real life people and fictionalize of course.

My son took his asvab (over 50...) and medical in March. The recruiter told him the Navy is only accepting high school seniors as deps, folks in the nuclear program, and women. It may be months until their is an opening. Has anyone else received similar information. He's totally frustrated by the process.......
