Steve - You're welcome.
Mark - No, they still are called formally, but one can choose to call them ensign so and so or just ensign for short (but not recommended). However Lieutenants that have been around don't mind (usually) to be called L.T. The most correct form of addressing someone is of course by their title, particularly if you do not know them in a work setting (i.e. Commander, Captain, Admiral and followed by Sir/Ma'am. For instance: Commander Weir or Commander sir/ma'am. Make sense now?
John V - AIRR is part of the SPEC-OPS programs as an entry level job - we call them Special Programs.
We place them there because of the strict physical requirements they must have and maintain - hence they will be training with SEALS, SWCC, Divers, and EOD. Answer your question?

Chief West-my son is finishing BC this week,and I was trying to figure out why he is training with SPEC-OPS group. he wants to become AIRR.but I dont see that on any spec-ops groups or on the websites that relate .could you help explain this to me ?

Chief, someone told me that the Navy no longer calls junior officers Mr/Ms anymore. They said everyone is called by rank. Is this correct?

For all:
The Navy's rank system is as follows:
E-1 is known as a Recruit
E-2 is known as an Apprentice
E-3 is known as an _ _ _ _ _ -man (Sea, Fire, Air-man).

There is a time frame for each rank, and it is as follows:
E-1 to E-2= 9 Months
E-2 to E-3= 9 Months
E-3 to E-4 (provided they pass their rating exam)= 6 Months.

The "naming" of ranks of the other services has always been a bone of contention, but we are the only ones who carry the distinction of having a separation for the CPO (E-7) level, that the other services do not. Small price to pay I believe.

HMMM. I've noticed how these papers list army by rank and Marines by rank, but Sailors as Recruits.

@SteveB357- I'm not sure exactly how they progess once they are past Boot and A school but my daughter Holly is still rated as "AR"(Airman Recruit) for about another month I believe. She completed boot in July and A school in Sept. I think. There are some time frame requirements that I would guess are based on their specialty.

Is it not the case that after BST, they are no longer RECRUITS, but SAILORS?

I sent this to a local paper. If I was wrong, let me know, and I'll send them a retraction. I thought that both the newspaper, and the parents of the Sailors should get this right:

I'm here, watching TV, and looking at pictures on this site.

I sent this email to a news paper, and thought that it might be good for parents to see it. If I'm wrong, someone tell me, but I think this is correct:

Dear Sir:

My son is in the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Center. In Boot Camp.
Because of this, I have a Google alert set to bring up news about the RTC.. and primarily receive community news items about men and women graduating from the RTC, or leaving for the RTC.

There is a point that all of the papers miss. When these men and women graduate, they are no longer RECRUITS. They are U.S. Sailors. Just as the Army graduates are referred to by rank and unit, the Sailors should be referred to appropriately.

I know that this type of news is submitted by parents or relatives, and not fact checked much, but can't you put in this fix?

New to this site and my son will go to RTC on Jan 4th. There is some really good information on this site and thanks to those running it! Remember, if anyone goes into the Navy Sea Cadet Program and make it through E3 in the program (about 1 1/2 years) they can go into the USN as a E3 upon gaduation! This can really help jump start their life in the USN.

My son called on Monday to get info for his security clearance. He got more than 1o minutes though. They told him this was a "free" call...he didn't have to earn it. He got to call his girlfriend for her info, his mom and I at our work.
