By the way, what other rating roadmaps would be helpful to ya'll? If someone from another group or N4Ms would like me to post one, please let me know.

EG, it's a pleasure to provide info to those who are interested. If it helps them understand the Navy, be more diligent in their service, or give them a little edge on promotion or obtaining a degree, why not? It's a win-win situation!

To answer Michele (and other inquiring minds), the active duty clock (ADSD-active duty service date) starts when they raised their right hands at MEPS and shipped out to GL. What's even better, is that their date for future pay raises (based on their anniversary PEBD-pay entry base date) is the date they joined DEP (delayed entry program). At that point they were considered inactive reserve.

So if you look at a pay scale, you'll notice the pay grade (E1, E2, E3, E4...) and (YOS) years of service, usually shown in 2 year increments. The sailor who DEPed for a year will be paid at the next higher increment a year before his fellow RTC buddy who didn't DEP, even though they PIR together and are the same paygrade. It's a nice little boost in the bank! (unless they changed things)

Kevin thanks for getting the ABF rating up for Vang. It is awesome for both the sailors and us parents to have you on this site. Not another better way to learn about something than asking someone who has been there, done that. Thanks for all you do. I'm glad to know my son will always be respected in a certain manner for what he has done for his country. (example). You will always be a chief to them no matter what. Thanks for your service Kevin and thank you for what you're doing for my son and his navy brothers.

Kevin - I have wondered, when does the active duty clock start for our sailors? Was it as soon as they finished bootcamp or not until they get to the fleet?

Chief, I am with James in Pensacola helping with the ask a sailor group. Do you know anything about ABF? I appreciated it very much, Chief.

Chief. . .um er Kevin - cute very cute lol your secret is safe ;). I believe I understand now about ratings and ranks and now warfare designation. If I come up with some new brain picking or mind bending questions I know right where to go! It is great to have an officer in our group :). Thanks for allowing us to lean on you. Enjoy our Birthday today!!!

Hi Michele, I goofed when I replied on 7/1 and the answer ended up on my comment wall. It was a lengthy reply about his potential college credits, so, if you're interested, select all my comments and look for the long answer on July 1st. Sorry.

Ratings and rank are two separate identifiers that the Navy joins together, such as AC2. The AC in this example is Air Traffic Controller, a job specialty, and the 2 indicates the rank of 2nd class petty officer (E5). Be careful, because Navy acronyms can confuse you...I retired as an ATC(AW), that indicates my job specialty (AT), my rank (Chief petty Officer), and my warfare designation (Aviation Warfare). Some of my friends were ATC(AW/NAC), which denoted the same rating, rank, and warfare, plus the additional qualification as a Naval Aircrewman.

So, for the most part, look for the first two letters to indicate rating, the next number or letter(s) to indicate rank, and any following letters to denote a warfare designation (or two). Simple!

By the way, since June 2004 I'm referred to by my friends as Kevin, not expecting to be called Chief anymore (don't tell mywife or kids!) LOL.

Kevin - I was unsure where you meant by your wall ? I checked your page and then here to see if there was information on ratings but maybe I am missing it. . .? Forgive me :). I hear a lot about ratings (which I am guessing is like ranks in other branches of the military) but I don't know how it works or how they rate up. If you could direct me to the page you were talking about or lay it out here for me I would greatly appreciate it. Also, forgive me for not giving you the proper recognition you deserve! Thank you so much for your service to our country :). . . .God Bless, Michele

Good morning EG, thanks for your kind comments. It was an honor and a pleasure to serve, and I'm glad that we all have the next generation coming up to carry on our proud traditions and protect our national interests.

All the jobs in the military are dangerous, by virtue of the fact that even a clerk or cook may be assigned to a vessel going in harm's way. That said, there are some skills that lend themselves to more risk; but where more risk is understood, more steps are planned and taken to minimize the risk or exposure. ABEs work with high powered machinery, such as arresting gear systems and catapaults, which must be operated and maintained by the book. Also, this type of work, along with almost everything else on the flight deck, requires the judicious use of personal protective equipment (PPE-hearing protection, life vests, steel-toed safety boots, gloves, etc), so encourage him to properly inspect and use his PPE daily.

Kevin I take it you served in the Navy. First let start by saying thank you for your service. I'm glad to have someone with the knowledge you have in this group you created. We will surely lean on you for answers to our questions. Hope you don't mind. I have no idea of what to expect with my son being a ABE. Is it dangerous, rewarding , etc. My son wants to go to JAG school but thought being on a carrier to see the world would be an awesome start. Any info on what my son will actually do will be great. I'm not sure he knows what he will actually be doing since he is fresh at A school. Thanks, EG
