Navy Dads

So its a done deal, recruit is off to his big adventure. A bit tougher than I thought it would be. I wounder if the Navy would change February PIR to say, San Diego? GL in Feb might be colder than the below freezing temps we expect here at home. God Bless America!

Hey there Ken. It has been two years since our son left for Great Lakes in the dead of winter. That first period was very difficult for our family as well but the reward at the end is worth every minute of our worry. To watch them graduate boot camp at PIR was absolutely one of the most incredible things that I have ever been a part of. No doubt that everyone would prefer San Diego but I doubt that will ever happen, lol! Happy Holidays and best of luck to you and yours!

Kent it felt like I was frozen at times in GL! Wear layered clothing you'll do just fine. Boot camp will be over before you know it and you'll be sitting in the PIR Hall. The graduation experience is unforgettable...

It's been 2 years for us as well. And yes it was cold in GL for PIR! Our son graduated on Dec. 4th and we )(from CA) almost froze. The good news is that he is now in San Diego, finished with C school and assigned to the USS Green Bay based in San Diego! He is only 180 miles from home and can come home weekends when he wants to.

San Diego is on my son's list along with Japan. We'd have to see where the future takes us after "A" School.

yeah, our recruit arrived at GL about 90 mins ago. I guess were going to get a taste of both. Our other son graduated, PIR Aug 13, 2010. Now we're going to have a Feb graduation. Good luck to you and yours!

Hey Kent,

My Son left on the thirteenth and it is hard especially to get that first call where their going for about  two days with almost no sleep, but I have faith in him to succeed and the Navy to take good care of him.I totally agree about San Diego sure would be nice but hang in their and know he's not going through this alone. The hardiest thing is being unable to talk to him for us but this is necessary to build discipline and the team concept that will make the successful  at boot camp. Has anyone herd of what happens over Christmas I'm wondering if they continue training or basically sit around and go an extra week at boot?
