Navy Dads

Gentleman, I'm sorry to air this dirty laundry here but I couldn't find my way to the ship 5 club. My son has sufferd a knee injury and is being separated from the navy. That's all well and good, the navy has certain standards that must be met during boot camp. BUT once a recruit gets sent to SEPS they seem to be treated like damn common day criminals !! I honestly apologize for my bold language but it has become more than any one person can take without having their say. My son like many others has sat there for days on end with no information what so ever and being put on lockdown for one persons lack of good judgement! Now after a week of sitting day in and day out PLUS marching and taking stairs with bone fragments and severe arthritis in his knee, they claim the printers are down and they will not try to restart them until Tuesday. I have nothing but pure respect for any and every military unit and man and woman that has made the decision to put themselves and their loved ones thru the painfull process but rewarding pride that it takes to be in the US military. I come from a long line of proud Navy personel. But the way our recruits are being treated if they are being separated is beyond shameful and honestly makes me more ashamed of our government than I have ever been. These kids tried and just because one thing or another kept them from completing boot camp doesn't mean that they should be treated with the disrespect that RTC shows them. Once again, I apologize for this rant but I have looked everywhere and talked to everyone for answers and all they want to do is pass the buck. I want to wish each and every recruit my heartfelt thank you for your guts and determnation that you have put forth to protect our great nation.

PC sounds good! I could go for some Hammer Head Feeds myself. Enjoy!

True, it sucks to be removed from Boot Camp and on an individual basis, I wouldn't have wanted my son to go through it, but, do you realize how many recruits pass through there? Do you also realize that not everyone is going to make it?

The problem with the world may be, too many lawyers, not enough good sailors.

Yes, I would not leave for a medical reason unless it is properly documented, especially if it happened in boot camp.  It is like a workplace accident and there could be future issues and costs. Even a Navy lawyer can help, they are at your service.  And if you want to fight you should be able to.

Talk to a lawyer? Seriously?

Sorry to hear this!  If he hurt it in boot camp and it wasn't pre-exisiting, I would have him talk with a lawyer before he signs anything as this could cause him problems in the future.   I know they can easily separate for any reason the first 2 years, but it he was hurt might be worth fighting for.

Brad,....not enough GOOD sailors???? I really hope you see your way fit to rephrase that statement! If you haven't noticed the navy has had budgets cut too almost nothing but they still have recruiters out there bringing them in,and RTC is separating them just as fast for the slightest thing. I honestly take huge offense to your comment, so many men and women get separated from RTC that would make amazing sailors. There is a HUGE problem with the navy system of separating SR's from boot camp. My son was the recruit athletic petty officer for his ship, and that would mean he was in very good athletic condition, but he sufferd a knee injury in boot camp. NOW you tell me...although we have no intention of contacting one because we just want him home...would the word " lawyer" really offend you if it were your child?

David, again, it may suck that your son had to go through this. Perhaps you can talk to a recruiter about trying again in the future, however, you can't sue the Navy because your son didn't make it. What's next? If you don't make it through Buds, they should be willing to give you more personal attention?

I'm not really sure what you expect them to do? Have a special group for those who get hurt, but may do well later? Keep pushing them back to create a bottleneck of SR's in the future? Create a new rating for rehabbing SR's? As you pointed out, the Military is going through budget cuts. However, you want to spend extra funds on recruits who may or may not heal properly and be productive in the future. What if your son's knee doesn't heal properly? How long should they keep him at RTC before releasing him? Won't you be even more angry if he sits at Ship 5 for six weeks, then they send him home?

Are you sure you're considering the needs of the Navy or just your son's needs? I'm sorry if you are hugely offended.

Brad, back up a few steps and read this entire discussion, my gripe all along has been the fact that he has sat in seps for almost 3 weeks now and still hasn't seen legal. Now that's a good use of tax dollars isn't it? Troy was just offering his advice and I am very greatful for it. As I said before, we have no plans what so ever to sue the navy because these kinda things just happen. We just want to get him home and get the knee fixed so he can get on with his life. I know there is a lot of red tape to separate an SR,but I would think 3 weeks is more than enough time to have at least got the process started!

Well then David, I don't know what we're arguing about?

My first response wasn't even towards you, it was towards the person suggesting you get a lawyer and look for ways to fight this.

Once more, I understand your frustration. A friend of mine's son was also separated for earaches, and when he came home, the local doctor found nothing.

My original point was, the Navy has so many recruits coming through, they don't really have time to deal with each case on a personal level, but move on with those not having problems. I've seen and heard of plenty of events where the military use questionable means in dealing with an issue. I just don't think a lawyer is necessarily the answer.

I agree completely. But I'm sure there are certain cases where a lawyer would be needed. I'm sure a lot of people don't realize that they could challenge the military with a lawyer if the situation called for it. So I don't consider it bad advice at all. if they would get off their butts and get him home I would be a happy camper. (And so would he) lol

Actually, the Navy will provide free legal advice if needed.

I think the point of the lawyer suggestion was to cover future medical expenses as it happened at RTC. Is the injury then covered by the Navy or a personal expense? At least that was my understanding...

I really have no idea what the navy will do if anything at all. Cody tore his ACL playing high school football , had surgery and rehab and was told he was good as new ( your never good as new after any surgery) lol Then when he enlisted he had to get a waiver for that surgery. The ACL didn't tear again but they said he had bone fragments floating around in his knee and sever arthritis in it as well. So I don't know how they will figure it. But I did get a call from him today and he made it to legal and they told him he would be home no later than Tuesday. Thank goodness!
That's great news! Sorry he had to go thru this ordeal, and its obvious that he really wanted to be in the Navy. I admire his desire, bravery, dedication, heart, and loyalty to serve! I am a firm believer that that things happen for a reason. Now go to PC snorkeling, and tell the cute waitress at Hammer Head Feeds I said hey! Y'all deserve a getaway! My hats off to him!
I love Hammer Head Fred's !!! Good looking women, great food and ice cold beer! lol
