The Advancement Exam Readiness Review (AERR) process leverages the knowledge and experience of E7 and above rating subject matter experts. During an AERR, each exam question is written and tied to a reference by the rating expert. The content of the occupational portion of your exam is tied directly to the tasks performed on the job (Occupational Standards) at each paygrade. The NAC staff also works with rating experts during an AERR to determine the weightings of topics and subtopics for exam development.

The E7 exam serves a key element of the Final Multiple Score (FMS) for candidates eligible to participate in the Chief Petty Officer selection board process. The FMS is used to rank-order all CPO candidates in each rating. Only those candidates who have an FMS in the top 60% will be board eligible. Candidates who have an FMS that falls in the bottom 40% of the rank-ordered eligibility list will not make board or be considered for advancement.

150 of the 175 questions on your exam are tied directly to job content and the occupational standards of your rating and paygrade. Rating subject matter experts (SME) who are E7 and above, participate in Advancement Exam Readiness Review panels where topics, subtopics, and the weightings (number of questions) are determined. SMEs review of questions and exam structure ensure enlisted exams are directly tied to the job advancement candidates will do at the next-higher paygrade. Each panel reviews exam bank questions to be sure the content is still accurate and reflects current Fleet operations. A rigorous review of the exam structure and weightings is accomplished to ensure any changes in equipment, technology, techniques and tools are represented in the exam bank. (N32)
